Re: Steel Bow Plate
I will re-iterate what TJR said above. The rust usually looks worse than it is. Our backstay "thing" looked about like the plate in the photos above, actually a little worse. When we ground it out, we found that the majority of the material was still there and solid. If we had wire brushed...

Re: New book released: global circumnavigation on a CD30
Finished your book last night, I really enjoyed it, thanks for sharing the link here. I will pass it off to my bride to read next :) I would like to hear more about your preparation for the trip and any work you did on the boat prior to departure. I'm also curious, you mention using industrial alcoh...

Re: Lifeline replacement
To clarify a bit, I was asking about through bolting the stanchion to the base. Most of the stress would be lateral so I am not sure the stanchions would pop out even if they were not fastened to the bases but it is still a good thing, Steve. The stanchions on Mariah were done this way and it worke...

Re: WTB Masthead Spinnaker Bail
I ordered a bail from Lefiell a few years ago for a previous boat and was very pleased with the quality (and price!) Here is a link... http://www.lefiellmarine.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=70:masthead-spinnaker-bails-&catid=89:masthead-assemblies-a-components&Ite...

Re: Two tots, a sailboat, and a storm
Here is a really interesting interview with the rescuers: http://www.dvidshub.net/video/328690/guardian-angels-rebel-heart-search#.U0gW7PldV8F Apparently 4 of them dropped in and stayed aboard the boat with the couple while they were waiting for the Navy to arrive. The rescuers seemed to think that ...

Re: CD25D on Ebay - Cheap
I'm envious, I came really close to calling in a bid when I saw her on the salvage page a few months ago. I figured she'd at least go for scrap value, but $56! That's insane and wonderful for you.
I wish I had a back yard!! Be sure to post some pictures and your progress on fixing her up.

Re: Gel cel batteries & alternators
[ Are you sure they are GEL and not AGM? GEL's are pretty rare these days and even more money than AGM.. I'm really glad you asked that question, because I went and double checked, they are all AGM. The delivery captain that did the sea trial with me told me they were gel, I just took him at his wo...

Re: 25D Offshore
There was another CD25D for sale that had Dynex rigging, it was the one with the $80k asking price though :) Why do you want to replace the chainplates? Are the backings in bad shape? We replaced our backstay with a bronze piece and it was a fair bit of $$ and work, I'm not sure I'd do it for them a...

Re: Gel cel batteries & alternators
Thanks for the info folks, I'll take a better look at it this week. I like the idea of using an echo charger. I am fairly certain the alternator is only hooked up to the starter battery, which I assume is because the starter is not a gel battery and the two house batteries are. The batteries are fai...

Gel cel batteries & alternators
Hey folks, Don't flog me for this, but our new boat is not a Cape Dory! You guys generally have good advice, though, so I'm gonna ask this anyway :) Our new boat has 3-battery bank, the two house batteries are gel cels and the other is the normal starting battery. The alternator is currently only ho...

Re: Recruiting for a potential CDSOA Southeast fleet (GA/FL)
Hey folks, As most of you may notice, we sold our CD27 today and are no longer Cape Dory owners. I'll probably continue to lurk around here since A) you guys are awesome, B) there isn't an owners association for the boat we will probably buy, and C) most other online sailing communities are full of ...

Mariah sold today and we passed along the reigns to her new owner.
Our (potentially) new boat isn't a Cape Dory
What's worse, there isn't an owner's association for our boat (and most of them are on the West coast)! I'll be so lonely.

Re: Hamilton closeout on Victron battery monitors
Did you have bad experiences with one? I'm legitimately curious, because I found them to be really under priced considering how much it would cost to install analogue equivalents.tartansailor wrote:I think that it is outrageously overpriced.
