Standing Rigging Replacement
1977 CD 28. For all I know the rigging is original. Besides the Wire what else is considered to be past its service life at 50? Tangs, turnbuckles, toggles, clevis pins, Bolts etc. What is considered uninspectable and should just be replaced because of age? Are the Bronze padeyes at the chainplates ...

location of padeye and cheek block jiffy reefing clew
For reefing on my CD28 main I have a pad eye and turning/cheek block at the clew followed by a series of strap eyes as fairleads leading to a 4" cleat at the front of the boom. I would like to add a second set of this hardware for a the second reef. My question is about location relative the th...

Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg
I'm no expert by any means and I do love my 28, with that said I think the guy has a point. I would not be at all surprised that a boat that is designed with the benefit of more complex theory/understanding of the dynamics of wave and hull interaction makes a safer sea boat. There is a pretty diehar...

Re: Port Light Gaskets
What glue have you guys used for the gaskets? I used Testers model airplane cement on the recommendation of Spartan and a couple of the gaskets have come unglued.

Adding spinnaker halyard, any tips?
I am getting a new cruising chute and I need to add a halyard for it to my CD 28. There is a spinnaker bail at the masthead already but no block or cleat. I have 4 cleats on the starboard side of the mast 1 for the main halyard and 3 small ones for the jib club topping lift, the main reefing and a c...

Genoa size recommendation CD 28
I got a quote on some sails from Precision. Hank on Genoas 150 and 135 and a cruising chute/asymmetrical/multipurpose. I currently have a 2 year old main and 2 year old working jib and a really old genoa which if I understand correctly that the percentage is LP over J is a 143% sail. I use the club ...

Re: Digital sextant
I think it falls into the uncanny valley. It has convenience features but isn't really built around the user. What I mean is that a sextant that say has a built in chronometer that can save the time of sighting without taking your eye off the sextant seems like a basic nice feature. This isn't that....

Re: Preparing for the Worst: Man Overboard
To the original question. I think you need to decide what to do ahead of time so no one has to think very much in a crisis. I would think the best bet for the inexperienced would be as someone else said seat cushions, a life sling, release the sails and motor. Emphasis on having someone,(if more tha...

Re: Preparing for the Worst: Man Overboard
It’s a distraction and creates anxiety for me. I have taken to snapping a few tethers in strategic places on the boat ahead of time so that when I wear a harness I work from tether to tether. I have one in the cockpit. One at the mast. One on the foredeck. This seems to work much better. I cannot r...

Re: Venting
I put a larger Lewmar hatch forward on my 1977 CD28. The moulding in the ceiling was the same as the large hatch above the main cabin so I cut it larger with a router. I still have the old Bomar hatch if you want it I don't know what a fair price is as the acrylic is hazed and it could use paint, I ...

Re: a dirty bilge...
When I first got my boat It had a whiff of mildew. I used a concoction that Practical Sailor had made up called something like 10 cent mildew spray. It had things like borax, wash soda, baking soda in it. I am not sure if I used it as a spray or if I just used the wash soda straight but it worked we...

Re: Typhoon Lightning Protection
You can read about lightning protection for structures and that seems to work as buildings and towers get hit all the time. The one useful thing I got out of mindless browsing on boats and lightning was the idea of having beefy jumper cables that you clipped to the shrouds and dangled overboard duri...
