Ballerina keel, indeed

I have experienced the same difficulty as you with my Ty Daysailor, and have reached the same conclusion as B Hartley. The key appears to be having the trailer deep enough that the bow meets the chock/bow rest while the boat is still completely floating. My marina, which pulls my boat when I don't h...

Brion Toss sizing guideline

An article on the Harken website by Brion Toss describes how to calculate winch size based on headsail area. I found it useful when I bought self-tailers to help wrangle the 150 genoa on my Typhoon Daysailor. By this calculation, my former Lewmar 6s had about a third of the power he recommends. Here...

Hardware store?

I bought a spare brass garboard plug for my Ty daysailor in the plumbing section of my local hardware store. Plugs in bronze and other materials are listed at Defender and Jamestown. As a freshwater sailor, I don't know the ins of outs of brass vs bronze for this application. Hopefully others can co...

Probably not

My guess is that a Mac wouldn't be affected by this Trojan. Others with a technical background may want to pitch in with details, or a more well-informed answer, but it is my general understanding that Trojans and viruses are written for specific operating systems -- in this case Windows, and not th...

CNG map

I found this map site, which lists public CNG vendors in Baton Rouge (Troy) and Seattle (Michael) when searched. No idea whether these are for real, but may be worth checking.

Here is the site: http://find.mapmuse.com/re1/interest.php?brandID=CNG&

Good luck,

Re: Typhoon Rigging Question

I also am a novice Ty sailer, so can’t speak with the authority of long experience. I think your intuition is correct that the heavier stern may be causing the rear stay to be slack while the boat is on the mooring. To help tension the stays on my boat, I recently purchased a Loos gauge. The gauge c...

Nice idea

Nice work. You're right about limited storage. I have considered mounting wood strips with several hooks along the top sides of the cuddy for hanging lines, PFDs, but haven't gotten to that yet. Good luck with perfecting the ladder.

Carbide paint scraper

I used a carbide blade paint scraper to remove Cetol on my Typhoon Daysailer this spring. A fresh blade and a fair amount of pressure on the scraper sliced the Cetol off in ribbons. Although the blade is flat, it worked well on the rub rail/toe rail as well. By carefully gauging the pressure, I was ...

Porta-Bote

I purchased the same motor from Porta-Bote for my Ty a year ago. I had roughly the same experience as Mike, though no advice on the different prop, which I may add this year.

CDI, Harken design differences

I also am a newbie when it comes to furlers, and as a Typhoon owner, as well. In addition to learning from general advice/likes and dislikes that may be forthcoming, I would like to learn about a technical difference I have noticed between CDI and the other major reefing/furling systems (Harken, Sch...

Rowing discussion on Ariel site

I recently ran across a helpful thread on rowing on the Pearson Ariel (26-foot Alberg design) web site: http://pearsonariel.org/discussion/archive/index.php/t-428.html An Ariel owner has detailed plans for winch-based oar locks, oar options, etc., at: http://www.solopublications.com/sailario.htm Lot...

MN Seasprite & CD22D

Scott, If you want to compare a Seasprite and CD22 head to head, both are on the hard at the Shorewood Yacht Club on Lake Minnetonka. The Seasprite 23 needs quite a bit of worrk, but the CD22 (with an inboard diesel) appears to be in good shape. A CD25 also is there, though I have heard it may not b...

Typhoon, Sr. hull speeds

Scott, The theoretical maximum hull speed of a Typhoon, based on a hull speed calculator turned up via Google, is 4.92 knots. 5.46 knots for a Ty Sr/22. Depending on point of sail & sail square footage, you could achieve these speeds in a 15-knot wind. Your current boat certainly is faster, but ...

CDs on White Bear

Scott, I am familiar with three Typhoons and a CD25 on WBL, including a gorgeous boat moored at Matoska Park and another on the north side of the lake. I may even know the famed silver-haired single-hander (was that you, Carol?). I am hoping to moor my boat there next year as well, although slip/moo...
