Re: CD 28 The Build to Blue... water

I recently replaced all the water lines in my CD28. Remove the plywood from above the water tanks and you'll have access to remove the tanks and get at the hoses. You'll be able to see where they go with a bit of effort. It wasn't a particularly difficult task.

Re: Furling Drum Rotation Direction?

Not back at the boat til Monday, but I believe you can furl either direction. The sailmaker wants to know which side to put the Sunbrella on. From a Harken manual "Tip: Sun cover to starboard—turn clockwise to charge. Sun cover to port—turn counter clockwise. Tension line while charging." ...

Re: CD25 cockpit coaming replacement.

Mine was not glued on. She was a 1978 model year. Just the screws and caulk.

I took both pieces off as a unit and then carefully sawed the forward piece off of the main board. CAREFULLY! If you take too much you have a problem.

Re: CD25 cockpit coaming replacement.

I broke a coaming on my CD25 many years ago. Dropped a line over the winch coming in too hot to the slip. Bad plan. I bough a teak board, used the old one as a pattern and made a new one. I built a steam box (used the wife's electric frying pan to generate steam, another bad plan). I was able to get...

Re: Stubborn Seacocks and Table Legs

I have valve grinding compound and Spartan grease if you want to service that seacock before launch. Let me know. I have a strap wrench that might help the table leg.

+1 for interested in esoteric discussions.

Life is too short for all the things I want to learn. CN is on the list.

Re: Does the cape Dory 28 have a bobstay?

Learned something new today. I love this board! I never wanted to hit any dolphins with any part of my boat. (Not likely to happen on Lake Michigan)

Re: Does the cape Dory 28 have a bobstay?

Mine has a bobstay, sometimes called a dolphin striker. Never seen a 28 without one. Is the boat new to you? Can it be stored somewhere aboard or with the mast? It isn't necessary to remove when taking the mast down.

Interesting group of boats. Looks like a trawler, a big cat, and a classic work of art.

Re: Is a wind vane wort the price

I have a Windex and that works faithfully. If the sun is making it hard to see I just go by telltales. I installed a Raymarine ST70 with the wireless wind indicator. I used it for the first summer and it worked well. I kinda like it, but I had a warranty issue last spring and I returned it for servi...

Re: Dry Sailing vs. Mooring

I launched my previous CD a 25 from a ramp. Once a season was more than enough for me. You may be able to streamline the process but if there are other boats launching and you have to wait your turn that's lost time you never get back. Boats are made for the water. I believe in maximizing that time.

Re: Is my Diesel Mechanic brilliant or a fool?

My Volvo is rated at 3000 rpms. I don't every push it that far. At 3000 rpm it sounds like the pistons are trying to change cylinders. The previous owner didn't say it wouldn't go to 3000 as I read the quote. Just that he didn't like to run that hard. If it won't climb the revs it can be a matter of...

Re: Getting New 25D Ready

fritz3000g If you decide you want to bring it closer to home send me a PM. Depending on where you are I could perhaps help with a tow. I have a one ton diesel pickup that wouldn't break a sweat hauling a 25D. The biggest issue you'd face is the condition of the trailer. Are the bearings good, tires ...

Re: Slip or mooring fees

In Milwaukee at the County run marina a 35 foot slip is $2,669. Nice facility with water and electric, a dock box, floating docks, and 2 parking passes. My yacht club is cheaper at $1,786 for a 40 foot slip, but damage to the breakwater a couple years ago has not been repaired yet causing a lot of e...
