Last year I had the yard install a dripless seal in place of the Spartan stuffing box. This was a bit of a major job...the shaft, shaft log, and cutless bearing were all replaced in the process. <img width ="540"src="http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g37/wmcochr/capedory/StuffBoxBA-1....

I can't help remarking that none of the responders own a CD 330 (at least according to the data accompanying the posts). It may well be that the boat came from the factory that way...you may wish to query other 330 owners to check. Like Matt Cawthorne, I have a CD36 and the mast, like his, is splice...

Don't have a photo of the finished install but used this fitting from Newfound Metals. Almost flush with the deck when not in use.

Wow, John, I've been doing it wrong. I drink the vodka while applying the bottom paint and when I'm finished I don't give a damn if it works or not.

WARNING: Private Message with Possible Malware

I have received a PM on this board (05:13 today EDT) from "profilicus", subject: Forum Administration. The PM text consists of the words "Important to Read" which is a link to open a Russian web site (http : // megl (dot) ru) which is most likely a malware site. If anyone else ha...

Hard Top Dodger

Dean, One modification/alternative you might consider is a hardtop dodger with sunbrella side curtains/window frames. I don't have any good photos of it but we've installed a "Wavestopper" hard top dodger on Phoenix and really like it. The top is a sheet of fiberglass that can be produced ...

Troy, Some thoughts...Phoenix is on the hard so all I can do in response to your query is speculate a bit. A few things to consider... - Based on comments on the old thread and comparing photos, I don't think there was a lot of material removed from the rudder, and once you've taken up the grinder, ...

Hey Russell:

Have a few more rum punches next time you post; that was an excellent piece on single-hand sailing.

Best regards,

It's all a compromise...

...Just like everything else on a boat. Troy, this thread goes back a while but you may remember it. I'm not so sure I'd accept less rudder travel. Tacking is only one of many situations. The slower the boat is going, the more rudder you need for adequate response (i.e., as Russell points out, close...

Others...

The current issue of Practical Sailor rates a couple others above Sensibulb. One is Alpenglow's new reading light fixture with integral LEDs. The LEDs look a lot like the ones used in Sensibulb's adapter, but there are 3 and they are mounted much further back in the reflector so the reflector is mor...

Another alleged expert joins the fray...

...no, not me. Chuck Husick, BoatUS magazine's tech writer, in the January '09 issue of BoatUS Magazine, retracts his previous stance as part of the locked prop camp and now is a freewheeler, although he does say that in practice it is necessary to verify that the transmission would not be harmed an...

The problem

Russell, for comparison, here's a before shot (sorry, don't have an after). The pedestal guard bolts are the two smaller ones above the sheave, one of which penetrates the square tubing and is partially behind the cable. Easy to tell that a hole to feed wires up the guard tube would go through the s...
