Marine business analysis

Sailing gear is expensive so I fret over every purchase but my experience with the online companies is all good so once I made my choice I move like I'm on a beam tack. Defender held a last item order until they recieved my check and Stuart Marine (Rhodes manufacturer) sent me stuff before I even pa...

mast raising method

I've raised the mast on my Rhodes 19 solo a lot of times. It has the same setup you have where you feed the mast through a hole in the cuddy to a fitting on the floor/keel. I'll try to describe it here: Basically I use an old mast as a crane. I stand it up next to the boat. I tie the mast to the cha...

Ann, Here's a link to an article in Small Boat Journal on sculling. http://councill.home.mindspring.com/sbjournal/sculling/scull1.html I've seen it done in boats about the TY's size with good results. Not particularly fast but quite graceful looking to me. After seeing Ralphs sculling oar pics I may...

I didn't come from a sailing family but my friend Dave did. We worked in the same office and he would go into depth on the theory of sailing (engineers-go figure) so I knew how to sail in my mind long before I actually set sail. Ironically Dave didn't own a boat at the time so this went on for quite...

Spring is comming (when)

John, I live slightl;y above the belt (Pillar Point across form Sacketts Harbor) and generally watch the clouds and news in awe. last weekend my number came up and I lived it. Its cold, hard and beautiful all at the same time. Still the news said 48" for oswego in the last 24 so I'm still in aw...

I remove my motor whenever its not in use. No real reason why other than I don't like the looks of it hanging out there. I sail a Rhodes 19 so its similar in size as a TY. The motors a 6HP Johnson, way more than needed but I've had it forever and its always worked when I need it so it stays.

The funny thing about the lake effects is I live about 45 minutes north of John on Lake Ontartio and rarely get the lake effect snow. actually I get very little snow at all but I can regularly see the clouds to my south and refuse to drive through it.

A story worth reading

Glad to hear he's on dry land now. Here's a story of a gent who navigated Cape Horn on a Pearson Electra (another fine Alberg design that was the predecessor to the Ensign).

I happened to catch it by pure dumb luck and it was all john said. Another worth catching if it re-airs was the christmas tree ship. It was a christmas special that showed life in the waning days of the schooners centering on a captain that shipped christmas trees (of course) from the UP Michigan to...

Still working on the Corinthian project?

You guys still working on the Corinthian project? I'm looking at some Corinthians as well. There's one in Annapolis at a good price with trailer, only problem there is distance. Of course it needs some work. There's also one closer to me in Vermont that looks to be in better condition as its sailed ...

After I posted I looked through the archives and found quite a bit of info on both, probably should have beforehand. I don't know if it will be this year but a Typhoon is on the top of my sailing want list.. Your right it looks like either would fill my needs nicely even though I'm 100% a day sailer...

Typhoon weekender vs daysailer

Lately I've been looking into typhoons, I think they'd be a good fit. I sail Ontario and almost always solo and a typhoon looks like it is custom made for that. But I don't know from a sailing perspective or other differences between a daysailer or weekender or if the cockpits much larger in a daysa...
