Its 9 degrees and windy.......
......I prefer to think of nicer times! Last August, coming out of Oyster Bay into LI Sound to meet Carter Brey sailing his Sabre 28. There was a lull in the wind at the time Carter took this picture of Sine Qua Non and me, but the reef was in for good reason. The wind abated. I shook out the reef and unfurled the 140% genny and off we both went!! Great sailing that day!!

I wondered about you Yankees :-)
Cold as it is here (high just above freezing), I knew it had to be colder up there. Glad to see you're looking ahead. . .or behind

Cold day
I spent the day at the boat. It was in the teens outside blowing in the 30s. The little electric heater never stopped but it was in the mid 50s in the boat. The dog and I had a great day working down below. Well I worked the dog just layed around and then got real frisky whenever we went out onto the docks. Any day at the boat is a good day, Steve.
cruise this week?
Warren,
That's a nice shot of Sine Qua Non!
Judith, I'm halfway thinking about sailing down the Neuse and up the Pamlico to Bath and Washington this week. It is a half-baked idea at best and I'm in a holding pattern right now with a weather eye.
Winter has been consolidated towards the end this year. Two more weeks before the calves start pouring out.

Cold Day
I stayed inside today and did my taxes from start to finish. This is about as close as one gets to living death.

This weekend should be nice(r)
This week, eh? I've checked out the weekend weather, and it looks lovely: low-50's, wind 10-11 mph. . .I'd sure love to see the Anne Freeman, and Warren gets a glazed look whenever he hears the word "cutter." But we've got the M-F work schedule, no correlation with calving. (I did help deliver a difficult passle of lambs once, all rubber-legged--them, not me--until toweled dry. What a sense of accomplishment )
We're stuck in the slip: just got the dead transmission revived, then discovered the radio's gone on strike. So last weekend was all about digging into the spaghetti wad of existing wiring. . .and experimenting with ways to get UP the mast without unexpected trips DOWN.
Still, if you get up thisaway, it'd be great to say hello. (Y'know, McCotter's is on the Pamlico River, just a couple hours past Bath )
Have a great week!

Second Chance
Everybody is focused on the temperature!
So what if half of the Hudson River has a sheet of ice on it.
Its all about the wind, isnt? Doesnt everyone say, when we have wind like this, its Cape Dory weather?

Picture/Interim stop
Warren, that's a great pix of SQN! The 27 is definitely one of the more aesthetic boats in the entire line.
Chase, if you need an interim stop (either way) on your trip to/from Little Washington you know you've got a place here. Hot water, electricity (no water on the pier), hot buttered rum, fireplace, etc.
Love to see you.
Meanwhile,
BRRRRR -- supposed to be 19 degrees tonight -- lowest of the year!

winter
Sure is great to hear about the spring weather you all are having. Can't wait till it gets that warm up here.We have had NEGATIVE temp numbers lately! It's even too cold to do a "drive by" ( visit the boat ).

Sailing available
Although I too am anxiously awaiting springtime, the current conditions here in New England are excellent for Ice Sailing! Plenty of ice and little (if any) snow. Of course, you need to be dressed properly and enjoy zipping across the lake at 50 mph. Not everyones cup-o-tea, I know, but at least it's sailing.

SPRING IS COMING
Another snow day/night/day/night, on and on. Just thought it was worth mentioning that Oswego woke up to 45"± of snow this morning.
The phone is ringing off the wall with people calling for my son to plow their driveways with his 4WD truck. I don't know what good it will do them when they do get out on the street. The city is shut down, only emergency vehicles are allowed to operate.
My next door neighbor is a local fireman. We have to take care of his pets. He has been working the last 30 hours straight. They have to locate and shovel out around all the fire hydrants in case of an emergency.
The sad but bitter truth is that there will be injuries and possible deaths in the near future from roofs collapsing under the weight of the excessive snow load. This is especially true for some of the older homes not designed with any consideration for snow load, and the old folks who reside there.
We are in a country setting with many older barns whose roofs will give way with animals trapped within.
The sun came out a short time ago. The landscape is beautiful with it's snowy mantle. Alas, bitter-sweet. 0° F tonight.
Think as you might, I wouldn't change this setting for anything or anywhere. It's our way of life and we can handle it well.

Spring is comming (when)
John,
I live slightl;y above the belt (Pillar Point across form Sacketts Harbor) and generally watch the clouds and news in awe. last weekend my number came up and I lived it. Its cold, hard and beautiful all at the same time.
Still the news said 48" for oswego in the last 24 so I'm still in awe.

75 degrees in CA....
Beautiful day on the water in Oxnard, last Saturday... About 75 degrees... Close to 15 knots... Little swell in the ocean... We sailed by a large mooring buoy next to an oil platform and counted 6 seals. Three more were splashing in the water...
We were in a CD25 and sailed passed a CD28 in the harbor...
New England, your time will come.
Best,
Stefan

Spring training starts in a week or so.
I was in the gym this past weekend calling balls and strikes at a clinic for college pitchers , so spring is approaching........ the covers will come off our boats soon enough. Lets hope for a early and warm one.
OJ, don't stand under the eaves of a barn with 4' of snow on it........especially if it has a slate roof !
