The restoration of my CD-10 included the replacement of all wood. For the gunnels, I had a friend rip the mahogany strips which I then steam bent as illustrated in the attached photo link. Cheers and good luck, Brian

Re: CD 10 Rudder gudgeons
Hi Dick: I believe they were fastened with screws. The wooden core of the transom on mine was completely rotted away at the time I began my restoration so I don't know for sure how it was attached. Inasmuch as the gunwales were attached with some very stubborn adhesive, the transom coring probaly wa...

A Good Breeze
Simpatico was one of three CD's entered in the recent Whitebread Race in Eastern LI. (www.pbsa.net). Lots of eye candy that day!

Jay and Jen: Congratulations on acquiring a lovely boat. We have owned Simpatico (hull number 841) for twenty-one years. I never tire of sailing her or looking at her. She’ll make a terrific first boat for you. Enjoy! Among my more noteworthy awkward and humorous (in hindsight) moments came while ...

Practical Sailor Praise in Jan. 2009 Issue
There is a nice little sidebar article praising Carl Alberg's designs and the Ty in particular. The article appears in the context of a larger story about the recent trend in traditional looking and expensive "trophy" daysailors. A nice old CD can turn my head just as well as one of the mo...

Just in case Coecles Harbor
is too serene for you, the annual Shelter Island beach blast is also held nearby on the 8th. (www.sibeachblast.com). Another great East End grass-roots event is the Whitebread Regatta Oct. 6th. (www.pbsa.net). Cheers, BA

Hello again Henry: I have never been asked about problems with the depth of the Peconics before. To be sure, this is an issue in the western reaches of the estuary, but most of the system has plenty of H2O to keep a little CD25 afloat. In fact, most of the boats out here have drafts of between 4 and...

Hi Henry: OJ is quite right about the Gut and Plum Island. Timing is everything with respect to passing through the Gut. It can be a bear or a lamb. I try to ignore the plumes of smoke emanating from Plum Island, but can't help but wonder what it is that I'm inhaling. The security is said to be very...

The clearance at Shinnecock Canal requires de-stepping. There are free do-it yourself stepping stations on both sides with very heavy duty manually operated equipment. I know several frugal North Fork sailors who use the station on the north side to drop/raise their masts. In transiting the canal wi...

J World, Key West
I attended the five-day racing course about seven years ago when I began crewing aboard racing boats. My goal was to gain proficiency on the foredeck (hoisting, dousing, jibing the chute). As a long-time CD sailor, this was all new to me. At that time the on-water instruction was conducted aboard j ...

Simpatico going to weather, full sails
This is Simpatico going to weather in a 18-20 kt. breeze with some fairly good chop on Great Peconic Bay, NY. If I wasn't about to round a windward mark, I would have considered more halyard tension or reefing. We were flying the #2 headsail (135) and simply dumped the main in the heavier gusts. htt...

CD25 PHRF Question
Hi Larry: I posed your question to a measurer for an advisory opinion. This is what he advised: "a CD25 with a standard size chute (max. girth no greater than 16.2 feet, pole length no greater than 9 feet, will take a 19 second penalty". Your local folks may or may not agree with this, but...
