NEW EVENT: CD Float-in Shelter Is. (Long Isl) 8 Sept. 07

Post by Leo MacDonald »

Dick Barthel & I are planning a raft-up in Coecles Harbor, Shelter Isl., NY on Saturday, 8 Sept. We would like to invite all LI & FI Sound and 'tween the forks’ CD'ers to join us.
We'll arrive late morning on Saturday (8 Sept.) and sail out noon-ish on Sunday (9 Sept.)
All are invited to Gam session/pot luck/appetizers/etc. on E.L. Saturday afternoon - Evening. :D
Joe Montana (of the Great 'Cape Dory Rendezvous 2007 - Essex') is rumored to be coming in First Light. Also rumored, he plans on using E.L. for motel services :?
Please respond to Dick Barthel at <rbartr6@NOSPAMcox.net>, 860-627-0840 or Leo MacDonald at <LeoCD33@NOSPAMsbcglobal.net>, 860-859-9600.
Or just sail in

Hey Clay, I am with you!

However, it would take me at least until Sep 8th to reach the Mississippi River, then 600 miles downstream, and then to Key West and around the tip of Florida and god only know how far to Coecles Harbor :D :D :D Not too sure I can be there by the 8th, but that doesnt reduce the desire CC.

BTW Skippie you need to check ou the link to the flickr photos started by henry hey :D

Sounds good

Post by Steve Laume »

This sounds like a great chance to actually get my boat to a Cape Dory event. I have never explored much of Long Island either so this will get me out there too. Sat late morning arrival must mean the tides are fair in the race early in the morning. I hope there is wind to go along with the tide. I might have to spend the night on the boat to get up early enough to make it to the start. I will be in touch with you all but figure I am in. This should be great fun, Steve.

Steve,

The race will be slack between 8:30 & 9:30. After you get past Race Rock and the race heading towards Coecles, the current will be on your beam if you're able to steer to about the 240 m course you need.

If we all want to sail together we can meet Leo near Valient Rk around 9:00 am.

Wind?

Post by Joe Montana »

If the weather is anything like this past weekend, don't worry about wind. It was brisk yeserday on the Connecticut River. I'm hoping to make it over to Coeckles, as well, weather permitting.

Leo,

I will most likely join you on Saturday, but I do not anticipate arriving until mid afternoon as I am not leaving Westbrook much before 9:00 am.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Shelter Is/Coecles Harb/Underway - Raft-UP

Post by Leo MacDonald »

Hi George,
That's great - Look forward to seeing you and the 'new' CD33. We can do some comparison notes

All,
We currently plan on the 'Westbound Flotilla' departing Valiant Rock, Fishers Is. Sound at 0900 on Sat. (8th.) E.L. will monitor VHF Ch. 68.
For those with crew billets open, recommend contacting a CD'er(s) out of area or w/ their boat not available and make an offer. E.L. will have the Great sailing couple Don & Diana Parquette as 'Crew Extraordinaire' :D
RA & I are looking at the food on board this afternoon (insuring the health and welfare of the 'Crew Extraordinaire') with the intent on restocking before Saturday.

Dick, I have never sailed in a flotilla with other boats. I will be single handing but still have a big genoa rigged on the headstay. The winds are forecasted for 5 to 10 out of the south. I might have to dive and polish the bottom again to have any hope of staying with you guys. Coasting home with the big drifter shouldn't be too much of a problem. then again the forecasters always lie so who knows what the conditions will really be. I plan on heading down to the boat on Friday to square things away and be ready to sail in the morning. Any idea what time you might be clearing Mouse Island? It would be great fun to try to stay together on the way out to meet Leo. I am psyched for a weekend away, Steve.

Steve,

I'll be singlehanding also. I'll be at the boatyard Friday evening and will probably tie up at the dock. I hope to shove off from Noank Village Boatyard at approximately 0730 to arrive at Valient Rock at the appointed hour. I've never been part of a flotilla either. It should be fun and much like The Compleat Cruiser adventures that we talked about this past spring. I'll also be monitoring Ch 68. Can't wait.

is too serene for you, the annual Shelter Island beach blast is also held nearby on the 8th. (www.sibeachblast.com). Another great East End grass-roots event is the Whitebread Regatta Oct. 6th. (www.pbsa.net). Cheers, BA
