Re: Seeking Depth Sounder Input
I have a P-79 in-hull Raymarine transducer which Paul references in my CD 36. It feeds a Ray Marine Multi-function GPS/Fish Finder unit and has worked well for past 15 years. There is room in the plastic fixture which I epoxied to the hull to fill with mineral oil. I've found that as long as I keep ...

Re: Purchased a Harken Type 1 roller furler from Binnacle,co
It's a head scratcher how they can sell for so much less than US retailers (even on-line). I think Harken establishes a minimum selling price agreement with their US retailers that obviously doesn't apply to those in Canada. I installed the ESP unit 1 on my stays'l. Just got the new sail, so will be...

Re: Sealing lazarette lids against water intrusion?
While I haven't had the cockpit fill from a breaking wave, I did have water intrusion into the cockpit lockers after rain or a good wash with hose. At least under these circumstances, I don't think the water is somehow flowing up and over the teak trim that mounts around the perimeter of the hatch o...

Re: In search of a Cape Dory 27 roller furler system
Unit size is determined by stay diameter and clevis pin size. Harken ESP Unit 0 allows stay size of 5/32 or 3/16 and clevis pin of 5/16" or 3/8" Harken ESP Unit 1 allows stay size of 7/32 up to 5/16 and clevis pin of 7/16" or 1/2" Not sure what you have on CD 27. I just installed...

Re: Engine sump
Similar challenges to keeping my engine sump empty/clean with 4108 perkins. If the stuffing box is serviced and adjusted properly, there should not be enough water dripping to fill up engine sump. When I purchased my boat, the stuffing box leaked a lot - and filled up the sump, allowing oily water t...

Re: Awlgrip Question
While not the entire topsides, I had the boot stripe painted about 15 years ago (forest green). While it doesn't get much UV exposure at the waterline, (or at latitude 38 for that matter) it has held up very well. Awlgrip makes two products for maintenance: - Awlwash: I've never used this. I just us...

Binnacle.com On-line Retailer?
Does anyone have experience with Binnacle.com on-line retailer? Looks like they are based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I'm shopping for a Harken ESP 01 furling unit (for my staysail) and their USA$ price is almost $600 less than the best price I can find with USA retailers. Seems too good to be true, un...

Re: Leaking bronze ports?
I replaced my gaskets about 10 years ago using the same McMaster-Carr material. The removal of the old is the biggest task. After scraping out the old as best of could, I used a small wire brush drill attachment. About 1-1/2 diameter and 1/4 - 3/8" thick. Fit perfect in the groves of the port c...

Re: CD330 ballast
Some 33's and 36's were out of trim port-starboard (typically listing to port) when empty. The factory actually provided a retrofit kit to add 200 pounds to starboard side (outboard of settee). Sounds like your lead bricks are center line versus outboard? I have not heard of the factory adding balla...

Re: Recommendations for Perkins 4108 Mixing Elbow?
Thanks John - I really like your approach. I also used 316 stainless pipe from McMaster Car when I last rebuilt. Can you tell me the size of the bronze fitting? Looks like 3/4" perhaps? An unrelated question - looking a your second picture (bottom right corner). I see a "T" in what lo...

Recommendations for Perkins 4108 Mixing Elbow?
When I bought my CD36 in 2005, I replace the riser/mixing elbow. The boat used the Yanmar elbow, so I replace with the same. Well, 13 years later, the raw water flow seems to be dropping and engine running warmer, so I suspect the raw water inlet in the mixing elbow is corroding up. So, time to repl...

Re: CD36 Fuel Tank Size
I replaced my fuel tank about 4 years ago. The tank, located under the main cabin floor, was indeed 53 gallons. I took measurements of the tank (quite irregular shaped to fit into the keep sump/fiberglass pan) and the volume did equate to 53 gallons. When I filled the tank the first time, I did crea...

Re: Replacing cabin sole
Not sure how similar the floor construction in your 330 is to my 36, but I would bet they're pretty similar. Replace my fuel tank and therefore the central section of the sole a few years ago. I found the 1/2" ply wood veneer sole was screwed and plugged in the 5/8" or 3/4" plywood su...

Re: CD 36 Questions/Interest
I am 6'4" and move very comfortably around below. If I really need to stretch my spine, I can do so under the main cabin hatch! My prior boat had barely 6' headroom, so the CD 36 feels palatial.
