I have the same problem and had thought about the "drilling a hole" solution. However, I am hesitant about drilling in such a manner so instead I just pump it out occasionally.
I'd leave it alone as the oil in the bulge problem could be an issue.

CD30B Registry
Over the years, I have tried to take note of the B-model CD30s out there. To date, I have counted 13. Here's the list as I know it: Year/Serial # 1984/327 (Mine) 1984/335 1984/unknown serial # (S/V Theodore B) 1985/339 1985/343 1985/345 1985/351 1985/unknown serial # 1985/354 1986/356 1986/358 1985/...

Maybe I Didn't Understand
My fuel tank is in the port locker and the hot water tank is in the starboard locker -- so I'm not sure what your question is. However, if you have more specifics, I'd be glad to help. BTW, I'm also looking at taking the fuel tank out to clean, but I'm having a difficult time trying to get the 12 ga...

Replaced the Hot Water Tank
I replaced my hot water tank a few years back. Basically, you need to get a pair of tin snips and cut away the outside metal. Once you do this, then you can man-handle it out of the locker. I have pictures of what I did if you need some visuals. Just send me an email.

This is a source of major problems with me
I have a CD-30 and am in Boston Harbor. I have a Universal M-18 and change the Prop Nut every year. In fact, it is a Size C and it always seems to be gone when the boat is hauled out. Here is my issue: The bolt that comes with the zinc doesn't fit my shaft! Last year I went to 2 West Marines, 2 Lowe...

Mast Crutch
I have a CD30 and would like to store the mast topsides for the winter. Does anyone have plans, pictures, or a website that I can see so that I can build one? Not only would I like to build one, but I'm interested in knowing how the "crutch" is held in place as well. Thanks in advance for ...

High Alert Area
I too know the area well. I sail out of Boston Harbor and it is an extremely busy harbor with high speed ferries and large power boats that refuse to give way or even reduce their wake. Throw in the LNG tankers, Coast Guard, Harbor Police, and others and you have a congested area. While the harbor h...

I service my own every spring and grease them just before she goes into the water. I've always favored them to be snug and they take some effort to move (not much but enough to give me a feeling that they are snug and waterproof). Mine certainly need a lot more effort than 2 fingers to move. Perhaps...

Also a keel stepped mast is much stronger than a deck stepped mast because the deck partners help support the mast My mast is deck stepped. I was not aware that any of the 30's came with keel stepped masts. But I do concur that Cape Dory/Spartan spars are good rugged things, and the CD standing rig...

Re: Picture needed of jiffy reefing
My CD 28 has the factory jiffy reefing hardware on the boom but I am unsure of exactly how to run the line. Does anyone have a good picture of what a correct jiffy reef looks like including the routing and tying off of the line? Rich, Page 115 of the Cape Dory Owner's Manual has a drawing of what i...

Fred, My CD30's mainsail also stops about a foot from the clew. In fact, it stops just above the cleat that secures the outhaul. My mainsail is about 5 yrs old (also a Doyle) and performs very well. In fact, the owners manual shows (on page 113) this arrangement (granted it is for the CD26 and 28) b...

Rich, I had a similar problem this spring when I greased my seacocks. What happened was that the washers looked like they were on right, but the flat inner indentation was not fully lined up and the washer wasn't seated properly. To fix it, I had to take it completely apart, reset the washer, and pu...

Re: Spring Lines
One answer to the CDs lack of manuverablility in reverse is the use of spring lines. There are several threads in the archives on this topic. I back into my slip in Boston Harbor all of the time. It isn't always pretty, but before I leave, I position a spring line and a bow line such that the crew ...

Spinnaker Bail
I have a CD30 with the bail on my mast. I have some pictures which I would gladly send out. The piece of hardware is made by Spartan Marine (at Robinhood Marine today) not Spartan Rigging. I know this because there is an etched Spartan Galley on the side of the piece. I looked at their catalogue on ...
