Re: Windvanes
If you are interested, I have a Navik self-steering windvane that is unused, complete and still in the box. I put this ad here in 2016 http://www.capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=34075. It's a nice fit for a CD 27 through 30 because it can be mounted flush on the rear deck.

Re: White powder on my thruhulls
Those look pretty good to me. I agree with sgbernd that the white stuff most likely is salt. Maybe the tapered plugs are a bit loose and are ready for cleaning, greasing and refitting.

Re: Boom pedestal for Cd30...looking for one
I have a boom pedestal that came off of a CD 28. Don't know if it's the same dimensions as one for a CD 30. It's over in my storage unit right now and I will be over there in the next day or two and can measure it if you are still interested.

1979 Cape Dory 28 for sale
I've been the caretaker of S/V Zephyr for 20 years. I haven't taken her out in a couple of years now and am falling behind on some maintenance and upkeep, so it's time for a new caretaker. She has many upgrades and additions. She lies in Port Isabel, TX. Slip available. If interested, email me for i...

Re: Spreader removal on a Cape Dory 30
I had to replace a spreader on my '79 CD 28. The spreader and the base had become one. Even though they are both aluminum, I'm guessing that there was enough difference between the two that Galvanic corrosion had pretty much welded them together. I tried multiple soakings with PB Blaster. I drilled ...

Re: US Destroyer collides with merchant ship
I did three WESTPACs in the 60's, each a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific, which in those days meant the Tonkin Gulf and the coast of North Vietnam. We would have welcomed a 100 hour work week. 120-130 was more like it. We were all sleep deprived pretty much all the time. And we would do ...

Re: US Destroyer collides with merchant ship
I served on a destroyer, the USS Robison, DDG-12, so this story really caught my attention. The USS Fitzgerald was definitely the give-way vessel and must accept full responsibility for the collision. These mishaps usually are the result of a convergence of minor errors capped by one enormous SNAFU....

table saw kick back
To add to previous remarks, kick back on a table saw while ripping happens to me most when the angle of attack of the saw blade teeth changes from down into the wood to back against the wood, i.e., back toward me. This usually happens when I let the piece of wood rise up off the table saw top as I f...

Re: Teak Oil Application
For anyone taking care of exterior teak, I would recommend Rebecca Wittman's "Brightwork: The Art of Finishing Wood". She routinely used teak oil before she applied varnish. After seeing the gorgeous pictures of her work in the book, I started doing the same thing and now use two coats of ...

repetitive steering quadrant impact
Okay, I'll take a guess. Some heavy metal object with a sharp edge---spare anchor?---that was stored in the vicinity of the rudder post shifted position so that when the helm was put hard to starboard or port, as in a tack, the wire cable and thimble where the steering cable attaches to the quadrant...

Forget the tape
I've been maintaining the teak on my 28, also named Zephyr for 12 years in the hot Texas sun. Best move I ever made was to not use any tape at all. Use the absolute best quality brush you can get and keep a piece of old tee shirt standing by to wipe up any miscues (which will become fewer and fewer ...

silicone removal
I've heard that toluene solvent is effective in dissolving and removing silicone residue. I think it was in a discussion of how to prep fiberglass for painting and a wipe down with a toluene soaked rag (turned often) was recommended to remove any silicone left over from previous waxings and polishin...
