typhoon backstay

Thanks for all the great comments - looks like Victoria will get both a topping lift and pigtail. I will also be redoing the boom vang and adding another track forward of the jib track I already have - Thanks to those fabulous images of Patty B et al. If only I could learn to post images I have some...

Typhoon Backstay

I am about to have a new backstay with open turnbuckle made up for my Typhoon. What are the thoughts about keeping the clip for the end of the boom on the backstay versus using a topping lift? If I stay with the clip - should I have it installed lower on the backstay or in the same place? I had my m...

Typhoon Cushion repairs

What type of product is there that can be used to repair abrasions or small tears in the naugahyde cushions? Is there a material that you can paint on like a thick filler that dries and remains flexible? Color is not important although the original blue would be best.

cavitation of outboard motor

I have a Ty Weekender with an older long shaft motor - and everytime I go to the bow the motor comes part way out of the water - it even happened with my Morgan 24. Since the motor is mounted on deck it is high off the water and the low weight and long lever arm of the boat witha large weight on the...

ty weekender transport

what is your timeframe? The motor should be a longshaft model to avoid cavitation. I would trust the Ty with no reservations. Just pick your weather window and leave 4 days for the trip and enjoy the scenery and the camping. The shallow draft is ideal for the area. Store the boat until hurricane sea...

typhoon outboard motor

I have an older Mariner 4hp long shaft and it works fine - usually don't even put it on the boat unless I am going for a longer trip.

mooring pendant for typhoon

how exposed is your mooring? I would use no more then 1/2" - then change the line if it shows any chafe or wear. This should be at least 2 years - although $15 for a new pendent is cheap insurance. ouwant the pendant to stretch as he boat tugs against the waves. This absorbs the shock on the cl...

I would be happy to look over the Ty with you. I have a 1976 Ty that I have completely restored from the graveyard and think I know most of the potential problem areas. Send me a pm at my emailaquarius@surfglobal.net if interested.

typhoon cockpit drains

I too had plugged cockpit drains when I bought Victoria. When on the hard I tried all processes to free the plugs from the drains but to no avail. There is a tight bend that the drain makes between the cockpit and hull and the leaves etc had been in that fitting for many years before I bought the Ty...

teak trim

Follow ed haley's suggestions carefully - excellent recommendations. Every time you use the traditional "Teak Cleaners" you are using a strong phosphoric acid reagent followed by an alkali to neutralize the acid. This is a destructive process. Not only does it release unneeded phosphate to...

typhoon teak

I too had the same problems on several previous boats. When I rstoref my 1976 typhoon I replaced the rub rails with new teak - fabricated in my friends shop. The old teak I sanded to new wood and then I used Cetol Light - 3 coats. The teak now always looks new with just a fresh coat every year. Turn...

ty weekender

I will trade you a set of original Typhoon sails for the weekender! I too bought a wreck of a 1976 weekender and turned it into a showpiece that gets accolades wherever I sail her. I have an older 4hp Mariner outboard and it is more than enough. When ou put too much weight on the stern she sits low ...

Typhoon Daysailer

Congrats - I too did the same thing - I bought a Typhoon weekender in need of a lot of work - in between racing and cruising on my 34' C&C I restored her and now really enjoy touching the water again! You should find many Daysailer photos on this web site in the archives. There are several messa...

frozen seacock

35 years ago I forgot to leave the seacock (gate valve) open for the winter on my old Morgan 24. In spring upon launching, I discovered that it had a crack on the side of the valve after she was launched - took on about 30 gallons of water before it was discovered. I heeled the boat over at the dock...

typhoon aft deck

I found that my aft (the typhoon) deck was soft and then inspected the fittings by removing them and looking at the screw holes - they were wet due to improper bedding at the factory. As a result the aft deck was spongy due to water logging and some delamination. After I repaired it there is no spon...
