Tadpole's return

I need to say something here in Sea Hunt's honor, as a fellow member of Coconut Grove Sailing Club and fellow sojourner among the mangroves during TS Fay's visit. Robert handled all with aplomb -- though I must also acknowledge his anxiety. And he undersells his abilities in seamanship. On the trip ...

Northern chill

Phil, I certainly feel your pain. We lived in Cooperstown for a few years and I remember vividly the 25-degree-below-0 Christmas Day that our furnace decided to quit. Luckily the fuel oil guys work on the holiday and we had our heat back by the time the inside temperature hit 50 degrees. We certainl...

BRRRRRRRRRR

Zaida, you are right. I was being a cockeyed optimist yesterday. This morning I took the dog for a walk on Collins Avenue and both of us were frozen nearly solid after our usual morning mile. So we wimped out again on sailing. And rescheduled for Sunday into Monday after all the weekend revelers hav...

Winter comes to Miami

A chilly South Florida greeting to all. Brisk NW winds to gale force and a high of about 58 degrees means that winter has us in its fiercest grip. And those of us who have no active memory of what winter really can be are bundled up and still shivering. As it turns out, my wife and I really are fair...

Ron, The Fortress FX-16 works great on our 27, which rolled out of the molds right after yours (hull 182). On our regular anchor, I have 6 feet of chain, which I am planning to increase to 10 feet. I also have a second FX-16 with 15 feet of chain that we save for hurricanes. For those we tie the bow...

Re: Another little known Cape Dory

Thanks for the chuckle. That trailer on a raft was our grandsons' favorite sight while leaving or returning to Coconut Grove Sailing Club through the north channel to Dinner Key in Miami. (Also note the leeboards on the boat in the background.) Alas, that little box on a raft was blown away in Hurri...

Companionway boards

Help! Anyone know of a marine salvage yard or other source of used companionway boards that would fit a CD27 or could be cut down to fit. The glue joints on my old ones have failed and over the years the boards have warped just enough that my efforts to dowel and glue them back together have failed....

Hate to tell you, guys, but zinc prices have already gone up. A year-and-a-half to two years ago the price of zinc on the London Metal Exchange was in the 35-cent a pound range. Today (5-31-06) it was at $1.76 a pound. It's a simple case of supply and demand. China and India have joined Japan, the U...

Yes, you're right. But we really didn't want to spend the extra money. Even considered selling her. But Pelican is so much fun to sail that we decided simply to go ahead. And now we certainly don't regret it.

Then what you want is the prop zinc. Check the diameter of your shaft. I'll bet it is 1-inch. In that case, check out the Camp P3 and PN3 on the Web. There are other sizes (the P3 set also works with 1 1/16-inch shaft. Hope this helps.

Is it the prop zinc or the engine zinc. If it's the prop zinc and your shaft is the same size as on my 27 (1-inch), then you want the Camp Company's P3 zinc and you also might need the PN3 nut set for it. You should be able to find these on the Web; they are available through Lewis Marine Supply, wh...

Hurrah for new engine

It took a month but Pelican has her new Westerbeke 20B Two. Now she can do hull speed under power. Before we were lucky to do 3 knots with favorable wind and current -- not a comfortable situation when a hurricane is approaching and ya GOTTA move. Anyway, to celebrate Pelican's new mobility, I'm off...

Thanks for the Beta Marine suggestion. I've searched out all the past discussions of repowers on the CD board and must say that the prospect of repowering is quite daunting. So daunting that we actually shied from it and put Pelican on the market. However, each time I went down to show her, it got h...
