Stiener binoculars

My Steiner binoculars have a compass built in so you get the bearing while looking through them. Very handy.

Sandy Hook

If you stop at Sandy Hook I suggest you anchor at Atlantic Highlands behind the breakwater unless the wind is east. Then you can anchor behind the hook without any rolling. In Atlantic Highlands communicate with The Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club Launch if you need anything. You can rent a mooring on...

Add kerosine

I delivered home heating oil for a few years back in the early 80s and once in a while we would fill up gas stations diesel tanks.

we would mix 60% number 2 oil, home heating oil, and 40% kerosine.

Oxalic Acid

Is the ingredient all right. It gets rid of most organic stains. I use the stuff from Davis called "FSR". It's a gel and so you use a disposable brush and paint it on and rinse it off. Wear gloves and eye protection! The brown on the water line just goes away. Any harder stuff takes severa...

Club by Club

It's an agreement from club to club and someone has to do the leg work. At our club it's the Yachting Commitee. True reciprocity is when you can actually sign and stay, dine, drink and play and the bill will be sent to your club. Your club pays the bill and bills you. We have that setup with about a...

NE trip

The current charts in Eldride make it such a great tool and there's lots of local reference stuff. And it is tradition here. On another point, especially from the Varrazano through the Throgs Neck, monitor channel 13, and talk to the commercial traffic, let them know you're there and your intentions...

Leave the reef ties off

I've seen a few sails shredded by them when the reef point blew out.
I wish I remembered to tell my sail maker not to put them in.
I have three reef points in my new main but I don't use the ties.
I love the lazy jacks as they keep things under control.
And a sail tie aft of the the reef grommett.

Battens

I replaced my full batten main last year and have the old battens in my garage. If you like I can cut them to length and ship. They are about 1 inch wide. The new ones are tapered on all 4 sides.

stay with the canvas

I have a one piece Fairclough 100% cotton canvas cover that comes well below the boot top. After 11 years the flag blue still looks great. I believe the sun will do far more damage than the cover over time. The frames are angled so that they pass over the stanchions, out beyond the rails and then ba...
