Re: Log of the Cape Dory 'Atea'

I enjoyed reading about your adventures.
Reminded me of my travels to Bahamas in the early 80's when conch and grouper were plentiful and on most menus.
Nice to hear about the baby conch.

Re: Zinc Chromate Paint and Barnacles 2022 results

Updated for 2024 results. For the 2024 season I again used the zinc paint - Rustoleum version. I did not put anything over it such as copper-based antifouling paint. The results were terrible. Must have been a bumper year for barnacles. See the picture - even the zinc on the prop shaft was covered i...

Re: Leoma hull to deck joint

Thank you for posting this. It gives me an idea of what the hull to deck joint looks like under all the pretty woodwork. I suspect that the joint leaks a bit on my boat. I've seen water running down the inside of the hull in the v-berth. It only happens when sailing in rough conditions when the deck...

Re: CD 25 windows

I replaced 4 of the opening portlights on my boat with fixed, surface-mounted home-made portlights. I found a good article on-line from Sail magazine which was my guide: https://www.sailmagazine.com/diy/replacing-fixed-portlights I used 1/4" thick plexiglass with a grey tint. I bought it pre-cu...

That's one awesome cover.

We're still sailing in Fairfield. Although just for one more week.

Re: repowering cd 28

Regarding: "I have the usual copious amounts of water coming out the exhaust. In neutral at idle the temp gauge goes to 250 in 20 minutes. The manifold gets very hot. The coolant does not. I am thinking I have a blockage in the manifold. I ran it without a thermostat." As a coincidence I h...

Re: replacing fuel tank fuel level gauge, CD31

Since no one else has responded - I'll chime in. You've probably already thought of this but - I have no fuel gauge on my boat, so I keep a logbook of engine hours and how many gallons I put in each time I refill. This has worked very well for me. The engine uses about 1/3 of a gallon per hour, so t...

Re: Convert Fynspray Galley Hand Pump to Foot Pump

Hi John, Nice writeup on the galley sink pump. I like your installation - best of both worlds. Just an FYI - I had to replace the Whale Gusher Foot Pump (WHAGP0550) in Felicity's galley back in 2020. The old one was leaking badly from the area shown here (this is the underside of the pump): Whale_Le...

Re: Looking for:

It might take some searching but McMaster-Carr might have some
fasteners, bushings, washers, etc. that you could use to replicate that.

Re: cutting a new hatch in sailboat

I'll second that. I wouldn't cut a hole in the cockpit sole because I wouldn't be confident that I could properly seal it and I'd be concerned that I would weaken it. Perhaps there could be access from the sides from inside the cabin or a cockpit locker? Not familiar with your boat but that is how I...

Overnight to Long Island and the iSailGPS app

Just an overnight from Southport, CT to Northport, NY. An autumn-like day and 15-20 knots of northwest wind made for wonderful sailing. Aug_21_2024.JPG I saved some apple table screen shots from the iSailGPS app that I use for navigation in case anyone is interested. The app allows one to zoom in on...

Companionway Vent using Port Visor

I wanted to add a rain-proof vent to my boat's cabin. I cut a 3/4" piece of Azek PVC board to fit the middle dropboard. Then I cut a 4" x 12" slot in it for ventilation. Then I added a screen to it and mounted the 14" Port Visor. The result is a good-looking, completely rain-proo...

Re: CD300MS refit

Nice work on the refit.

Did the propeller puller shown in your picture work?
I tried a similar one on my prop but it wouldn't budge.

And I tried a homemade one (see picture) but it failed also.
Different boat, different prop but just curious as to how it worked.
