Re: Cape Dory 27 Mast Compression Plate

Hello Fred,

I like the 9x9 cover that you made. What material did you use?

I plan to do similar - enlarge an existing opening for the mast wires and take a few core samples.

Re: Need Assistance for Winter Storage in N.E.

I've been happy storing my boat at Norwalk Cove Marina in Norwalk, CT on Long Island Sound these past 15 years. Outdoor Winter Storage last season was $84.50 per foot LOA. That includes haul out, power wash, storage and launch in the spring. They do not require mast be taken down. They allow you to ...

Re: Projects Lead To More Projects

Looks like the hull to deck joint was sealed on the front half of the boat.
Interesting way to do it since I would think that is where most of the leaks would have occurred.
And maybe less work than doing the entire seem.
How has that worked out for you?

Thank you for the dimensions. Much appreciated. I'll give this a try sometime this summer.

Re: Weather stripping for cockpit lockers?

That's a great idea.
Could you tell us the dimensions of the foam you used - thickness and width?
I'd like to try the same thing.
Thanks for posting that.

Solar Panel Mounted with Sea Dog Round Rail Clamps

I found a good spot to mount a small, 50 watt flexible solar panel on Felicity yesterday. I ran the wire up through the stainless steel pushpit rail. The previous owner had drilled a hole at the base of the vertical support and an exit hole on the horizontal top of the rail. So I used those. I cut a...

Re: Cockpit Locker Hinges - bolt replacement

Thanks for the replies.
I guess this Winter I'll take them apart and bring them home to dry out.
Then remediate the holes as you've described and rebed.
Probably some water trapped in there still. Might take a few months for them to dry out.

Re: Orion is in Bermuda for a 6th visit

Sounds like a great trip.
Was it about 600 nautical miles?
Hope that you enjoy Bermuda.
I only visited there once (by plane). I recall some excellent snorkeling in clear cool water.

Re: Cockpit Locker Hinges - bolt replacement

Thanks for that info Jim. I hadn't thought to test the old machine screw before I tossed them out. I've seen write ups from other Cape Dory owners about recoring the tops of their cockpit lockers after they got rotted by water getting in. I had thought that mine were not cored until now. Fortunate t...

Cockpit Locker Hinges - bolt replacement

Just an FYI concerning something to check on your boat. After reading a recent article about things to check during Spring Commissioning I gave my cockpit locker hinges a quick check. The hinges are bolted to the top of the locker. Some of the bolts had rusted such that the nuts had fallen off and t...

Re: A home made "Power Dorade" solar vent fan

I took a different approach this year and removed the dorade box and sealed the hole. The box was leaking (see earler picture above and note the split in the top of the box). Removing the box took some effort and I ended up cutting it into pieces. It was attached to the boat with 4 screws. I sealed ...

Re: Bronze Dyna-Palte and leaky bolts

I ended up replacing the backing board with a piece of 3/8" G-10. Slightly easier to cut than 1/2'. I cleaned up the old dynaplate with an angle-grinder fitted with a 120 grit floppy disk. I used new silicon bronze bolts, nuts and washers from Fair Wind Fasteners. I chamfered the holes in the h...

Re: Marinco 4" solar fan

A couple of years ago I set up a fan to draw air in through the dorade vent. See my post here: https://capedory.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=218928&hilit=power+dorade#p218928 It did work well and moved a significant amount of air. And the solar panel mostly kept up with the battery draw from the f...

Re: V-Berth refresh - your comments please

Finally got this project completed (mostly) yesterday. I reinstalled the ceiling boards and replaced the boards for the bunks in the v-berth. The old, original boards were badly rotted from water ingress and wear and tear over the years. I used 1/2" marine plywood with barrier-coat primer and R...
