21A rear seal
HI all: A few years ago I had lower engine oil leaks. At first I thought that I needed to replace my rear crank seal since this was the area where the oil seemed to originate from. I was vagely aware that the front seal and oil pan gasket were failing also. Since the rear is such a pain to access I ...

Pedistal Screws
Hi Sean: I am working from memory here... a dangerous poorly charted area full of shoals. Seems like 5 years ago when I confronted your exact situation. After working the stud extractor route and breaking two along with several drill bits, I ground the heads off of the screws that wouldnt give it up...

Campbell Sailor
Hi All: I bought a Campbell Sailor last June when I was in the yard for my annual haulout. It has been one of the most frustrating boating experiences ever. It has been a very long 6 months sorting this out. The origional prop sold to me and sized by West by North Enterprises was a 14x9. This prop w...

Hi Cappy: I was having some smoke and hard starting problems with my engine. It was at this time I also experienced the aberrant oil pressure readings. Figured trying an oil additive was the cheapest way to fix the problem. I added Lucas to the next oil change and the engine just got harder to start...

I experience a slight reduction in idle speed oil pressure when the engine is hot after an oil change. The oil increases in viscosity on some engines due to the increase in carbon from ring blowby. This is why your oil goes black almost immediately after an oil change. The hot idle readings rise slo...

Lexan boards
While Lexan is more resistant to breakage, its also more susceptible to UV degregation. Lexan will craze and yellow faster than Acrylic. If you want them to last use Acrylic boards. Plexiglass is just a trade name for Acrylic. After you price 1/2" or thicker Plexiglass you may find that Teak is...

New Sails
Hi All: Well I finally broke down and spent the $8k for new sails. I could not be happier with the result. Its amazing. The boat now will balance. Before inorder to balance the boat I had to roll in some of the headsail to take out excessive weather helm. Now I just make slight adjustments to the ma...

Down wind sailing
Hi all. I single hand my MkII routinely and down wind with just a headsail is great. The boat moves like its on rails. 120 aparent is ideal. Much more astern and the sail wants to jibe. Less and you begin to require the main to help steer. I have sailed the channel at Featherbed Banks... its about 5...
