Re: stuffing box nut rotation direction

And adjust it while the boat is in the water. Otherwise you cannot determine if you have it tightened enough. While you have it out you might as well repack it. Its cheap insurance in the unfortunate event the packing is worn out and cannot be tightened enough to stop the excessive dripping. I found...

Re: Odyssey AGM batteries, continuing confusion with chargin

Hi: The Morningstar Prostar is fine. I have a Morningstar controller also. Its the way your system is set up that I suggest changing. If your alternator is a factory supplied standard, then its 99% likely an internally regulated type which will not be set to the correct voltage or charging profile f...

Re: Odyssey AGM batteries, continuing confusion with chargin

Hi: I just posted on your more recent question. You have several issues. First, your electrician seems to have connected all three batteries to the controller directly. Not a good idea. I suggest having the two house batteries connected directly to the solar controller and getting a Xantrex Echo Char...

Re: intermittent Autohelm Tridata 50

The bad ground is a good lead. I would add that checking the switch you mentioned is also high on the list. Those switches go bad. Check the alternator connections. Since the problem seems to happen when the engine runs. The thru hull sensors do go bad and the result is all zeros. Unlikely that both...

Re: Battery charging advice

If your solar controller is wired directly to the batteries (my preference) with a fuse on the red wire from the controller, then the battery switch position will affect the system in the following way: Assuming you have a simple on/off switch. If you have a 1/2/all/off switch its a bit more complex...

Re: Battery 1/2 unequal charging

Check each connection and cable for voltage drop. Check the battery in your multimeter first. Those things go nuts with a low battery. BTW if it isnt one of those digital types that reads to hundredths of a volt its worthless. Take the offending battery out and charge it separately. Once charged put...

Re: Tips on Solo Sailing

I solo'd my CD30 MkII for 13 years. The most important things I learned are: Become proficient at heaving-to under all conditions. Its a huge convenience and saved my bacon a number of times. e.g. raw water impeller fails as I approached Port Everglades. Have enough tools and spares on board to fix ...

Re: Refrigeration on a CD31?

In a previous life I had a CD30 mkII which had an Adler Barbor refrigeration unit. It would completely flatten two group 31 batteries over night. I went thru the typical routine of insulating the box using squirt foam and rebuilting the lid adding gaskets where there were none before. I also install...

Re: Insurance

Hi All: Well the dust has finally settled and I have insurance. What an experience. Its been traumatic. I had been quoted $3900 from Boat U.S. ... an $800 increase from the year before. I was uncomfortable with the $3100 I had been paying before. Keep in mind that I have been with Boat U.S. for 20 y...

Re: Insurance

Hi All: I have solicited proposals all over the map. So far the best is from "London" a British company. I am going to call the agent today and fine tune the application. Their quote was for $1595 and I need a new survey that will cost me about $1000 between surveyor and haulout. I am thin...

Insurance

Hi All: Has anyone else gotten their renewal from Boat U.S. I see its now being underwritten by the lizard company. My premium went up, the cruising limits were reduced to "the Coastal and Inland waters of the U.S. and Canada". I havent read thru all the Endorsements yet but at this point ...

Mermaid Condensator replacement

Hi All: I have been having problems with the Condensator on my Mermaid airconditioner. This is a solid brass venturi valve that sucks the condensate out of the boat and injects it into the air conditioning cooling water stream. Mermaid sells replacements for around $200. Turns out this is nothing mo...
