Re: Please help. Locate seacocks cape dory 28
... i am looking for the small wheel assembly (?) for the boat speed. I cannot seem to find it but i saw it when i hauled the boat ... There is no seacock on the speedo paddle wheel, but there is indeed a through hull (usually peculiar to the instrument manufacturer). Quite often it's simply a thre...

Re: Suzuki 2.5hp repair
My 2.5 would only start at a high throttle setting ... took my carb off and apart ... clogged but hard to clean ... new carb ... I'd bet that most small outboards eventually have a similar problem. As mentioned by others in this thread, the "trick" is to remove all fuel from the carb duri...

Re: Engine winterizing question
The engine kill cuts fuel delivery to the injectors, and turning the engine over with it active will splash a bit of oil on the cylinder walls, but the top end stays dry. Note also that many of the older owner manuals for small diesels suggest using the "kill switch" technique to pre-star...

Re: Engine winterizing question
... The only reason why I would consider starting and running the engine is to make sure it starts and to circulate the oil to coat the inside of the engine for another winter's nap ... Just pull out the "kill switch" and turn the engine over for a few seconds. This circulates oil to the ...

Re: Southern New England - Late August 2016
Nice meeting you Armond. Great Salt Pond, Block Island ... an entertaining place ... Luckily the front pushed through and I was able to get a couple hours sleep ... wish you well as you continue your cruise. Jim, luck wasn't entirely on our side this time. After leaving Block to visit Westport MA a...

Re: How to start a rendezvous 2017?
I'm guessing that a large percentage of the Typhoon owners have trailers. There are three launching ramps in the area of Falmouth on Cape Cod which is adjacent to the Vinyard. Where there's a will there's a way. I will await the tally of Typhoon owners who make this noteworthy passage to Edgartown,...

Re: How to start a rendezvous 2017?
I would love to go, but I'm not sure how I would get my boat over to Martha's Vineyard. I'm not sure how far it is from Marion, MA to the Vineyard, but I do know it is too far for me to sail in my little TY... Perhaps there are other intrepid sailors who would be willing to sail across, but I'd rat...

Southern New England - Late August 2016
CD28 "Kerry Deare of Barnegat" will be in southern New England for 2 - 3 weeks in late August and early September. We hope to visit the "usual suspects" (Block Island, Narragansett Bay and tributaries, Westport MA, etc). We always enjoy bumping into other CD sailors along the way...

Re: Bilge pump blues
... If checking your boat daily is not feasible, is there any other option other than an automatic system? ... I know it sounds like a "non-answer" but the solution is to work assiduously to eliminate every possible leak, secure every hole in the boat, check every hose that may offend, an...

Re: Bilge pump blues
... there seems to be some difference of opinion on the value of an automatic bilge pump. The fact that that debate exists makes me feel better about my conviction that the current known options (at least known to me) may be lacking ... ... The following is of course just a coincidence regarding ti...

... plan is to head out south of Nantucket then set my next way point for Sable island off of Nova Scotia. I will do a sail by or anchor there for the night if things are settled then on to the south coast of NFL. The rum line is about 950 NM so I will definitely get my sailing fix for this year .....

Re: Cape Dory 28 Backstay
I am a new CD 28' owner ... I need to have the backstay and two spreaders replaced. I would like to get quotes on the backstay from rigging vendors but they ask me for length, diameter and pin size ... Perhaps the simplest route is to order the backstay to within a few inches (easily enough to meas...

Re: Any Maritime Lawyers here?
... what is the legal status of these moorings? Seems to me, without authorization from the appropriate registry, whether it be local harbormaster, state, or fed, these moorings have no rights and are essentially “abandoned” items on someone else’s property. Can someone just drop a mooring anywhere...

Re: Maine to Salem, Mass.
Annisquam River is a picturesque route. It has 2 bridge openings you have to wait for, but not long usually. There a a few sharp turns and you'll need to pay close attention to the channel markings at low tide. Gloucester is a good stop and the harbormaster is friendly and helpful. I echo Ron's com...

Re: Compass and Wiring 1977 CD 28
... I was struck by the location of the battery selector switch. It is very close to the compass as you can see from the attached photos. Judging by an old caution plate telling you not to switch off the battery while the engine is running I am assuming that this is approximately where the battery ...
