Maine to Salem, Mass.
Contemplating a cruise from Harpswell, ME to Salem, MA. This would be an entirely different passage for me as I always seem to head north and east out of Casco Bay. I would most likely be single-handed and am soliciting advice of any sort. Especially curious about particular routes, anchorages, dangers, favorite stops on the way, marinas in Salem for a couple of overnights, etc.

Re: Maine to Salem, Mass.
I did this trip (Portland to Salem) last year. I had miserable weather and contrary winds, but if you doing it during summer I bet the weather will be much more enjoyable.
I have found Kennebunkport to be a nice stop for the night because it is sheltered and calm with both fuel and provisions. You may want to stop at isles of shoals, but there are no facilities for fuel or provisions. If you go during the week, you are more likely to be able to pick up one of the moorings in Gosport Harbor free of charge.
Once you reach Cape Ann you can go around or go through the river. I had no trouble with the river and found it very beautiful. Cape Ann Marina Resort at the end of the river was very convenient for diesel and a restaurant meal.
Brewer Hawthorne is the main marina in Salem. You will likely have a choice of mooring or slip and its full facilities. You will be in good Cape Dory company in Salem!

Re: Maine to Salem, Mass.
Thanks, Ted, very helpful. Curious about the river at Cape Ann. Wasn't sure it would be navigable at all tides for my 5' draft.

Annisquam River is a picturesque route. It has 2 bridge openings you have to wait for, but not long usually. There a a few sharp turns and you'll need to pay close attention to the channel markings at low tide. Gloucester is a good stop and the harbormaster is friendly and helpful.

I echo Ron's comments. Try to enter the Annisquam on a rising tide, and once inside you should try to stop at the Annisquam YC just to port. Lovely spot and lovely folks with a fine sense of humor and humanity. Otherwise continue along to moor or anchor in Gloucester Harbor. Be sure to watch the turn at the RR bridge inbound.Ron M. wrote:Annisquam River is a picturesque route. It has 2 bridge openings you have to wait for, but not long usually.
