Re: prop vs. sailboat prop
Hi all, The basic difference between a sailing prop and a powerboat prop is this: Take the diameter of the prop. Use it to make a circle. There is an area to that circle. Pi X radius squared. This is known as the swept area. A powerboat prop covers more of the area described by the circle. A sailing...

Re: Lofrans manual windless on cutter. searched forum...
Hi all, I installed a Lofrans on FeNIX, CD28. Some words of caution follow. The windlass was strong enough for my 1/4" high test chain and when the windlass worked it was fine. BUT!! I often had to retrieve the anchor and chain by hand because the main shaft on the windlass siezed. Granted I wa...

Re: SunShine to Cebu
OK OK OK You guilted me into it. Hi all, It has been just about a year since my last big outing with SunShine. When SunShine and I started out from Florida in 2010 I had a general plan. At that time the plan was to go through the Panama canal then across the Pacific to American Samoa and then north ...

Subic again and back to Carmen
Hi all, It was pretty easy to settle into the old routine again. Potter about the boat in the mornings with some computer time in the afternoon. Then a trip out to the floating bar. I have found, now don't stone me for this, that my general disinterest in beer has turned to a total dislike. Just do ...

SunShine returns to the Philippines
Hi all, The day before leaving I checked the weather on PassageWeather.com. Tuesday February 14, 2012 at noon we left the mooring field and headed for the fuel station. In a way I really had to leave what with no place to stay and being already checked out. Fortunately the weather looked promising. ...

SunShine to Subic and beyond
Hi all, I admit it! I have been very lazy and not done much writing nor updated SunShine's website in about one year. So here it comes, probably in a number of installments. Having arrived here in Cebu last year it seems that the Philippines have adopted me. Or maybe I have adopted the Philippines a...

Re: External Chain Plates
Hi all, Make no mistake, Cape Dorys are beautiful boats. The question of internal vs. external chainplates is largely one of esthetics and ease of the work involved. On my CD28 the steel backing plates were already gone when I purchased the boat. To distribute the load of the padeyes to the hull a P...

Re: The Self-Sufficient Sailor by Larry and Lin Pardey
Hi all. Knew the Pardeys years ago, back when I was building BCCs for Sam Morse. I second Lynn's idea. After something like 70,000 miles of sailing I have only worn my harness three times. Each time on the foredeck, each time in about 50 knts. And only on my CD28. So far have had no need on the bigg...

Hi all, My choice was a 10' Port-A-Boat. I got it in the aluminum gray color. White and hideous green also available. I bought it through a local dealer at the Tampa boat show about 2 1/2 yrs ago. It was delivered to my door from California for about $1,400. That's quite a bit less than the on-line ...

Re: Floating hams--info needed
Hi all, I have successfully used an ICOM 718 on both SunShine and FeNIX. On FeNIX I got a used radio and tuner on e-Bay. Both worked flawlessly and for about $600 a good deal. For SunShine I got another used 718 but couldn't find a used tuner so got a new one online somewhere. Pays to shop around. T...

Re: anti-seize compounds
Hi all, For many years I have used simple "teflon pipe dope paste". It's the stuff you can buy in any hardware store. It comes in a plastic jar with an application brush attached to the inside of the top. I use this for any dis-similar metal contact and as an anti-sieze on turnbuckles and ...

Fred and SunShine
Hi all, To let you all know SunShine and I are alive and well. Have decided to fly back to the US for a short visit rather than sail the 8,000 miles single handed to SoCal. After my brief visit to Hong Kong I eventually returned to Pt Carmen, Cebu. When I return after my stateside visit I plan to do...

Hi all, My spin block was attached to a standard masthead bail that came with the boat. I had no furling of any kind so no interference with halyards and fuler bearings. The assym was tacked with a small 3:1 tackle from the end of the bowsprit. (As many of you know my sprit was one foot longer than ...

Re: MD7A vs. MD7B
Hi all,
Far as I know
A = direct raw water cooling
B = heat exchanger with fresh water cooling
It is possible to add a seperate raw water pump and heat exchanger to an "A" and make it fresh water cooled but hardly seems worth the expense involved.
Take care,
Fred

Re: Roller furling or Hank on
Hi all, On my 28 I often flew the very light(0.75 oz) assym. To retrieve the sail on this boat is very easy. but not the normal way. I attached the tack to a small 3:1 tackle with a snap shackle on the end connected to the the sail. To retrieve the sail I went forward and tripped the snap shackle. T...
