prop vs. sailboat prop

Post by Brian2 »

Does anybody know the difference between a sailboat prop and a regular prop? Currently I have a 3 blade 13 x 10 prop and will be getting a new prop, and one person mentione a sailboat prop, and another person said standard prop is what they sell 99% of the time, even to sailboats. Anyone have pictures of the two?

Scroll down the first link to MaineSail's excellent, as usual, discussion of props.

WestbyNorth sells the "Campbell Sailor".
GetaProp sells the "Michigan Sailor".

I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Means no.

When I replaced my ancient evinrude with a Tohatsu Sailpro last fall, the hp remained the same but the performance I received is incredibly better. The difference is the additional thrust provided by the prop. It's all in the pitch of the prop blades. As I understand it, a high thrust prop, like the SailPro has, is sorta like the additional torque of lower gears in a truck going up a hill: not great on high speed, but superior in pulling power.

Read the articles, though, which are good references and explanations.

All the best,

Hi all,

The basic difference between a sailing prop and a powerboat prop is this:

Take the diameter of the prop.
Use it to make a circle.
There is an area to that circle.
Pi X radius squared.
This is known as the swept area.
A powerboat prop covers more of the area described by the circle.
A sailing prop covers less area.
Generally a prop is described by the percentage of swept area that the blades occupy. i.e. 30% would mean the blades cover 30% of the swept area. This is generally the amount used by a three blade sailor prop.
Simple, no?

Take care,
Fred

You should always have an odd number of holes in your boat!

I'm currently discussing the purchase of Campbell Sailor prop with them. They have been very helpful. What engine and transmission do you have?
