Hi:
I'd put an autopilot on the must have list. On the nice but not vital list I'd include roller furling on the yankee, a cockpit radio mike, halyards led back to the cockpit.
Good Luck,
Tony Jeske

New Seacocks in Typhoon
Hi Ronkberg: My comments assume you're installing Spartan seacocks in your Typhoon. If not, you'll need to disregard some of this. Since the seacocks are new, you won't have to lap them. In fact, if you regularly service them, they may never need lapping. The plugs on the sides of the seacock are wa...

Volvo tools
Hi: I had a Volvo on my last CD-28. The impeller was at the rear of the engine and difficult to get to. I seem to remember I needed an offset screwdriver to remove at least one of the screws. For removing fuel and oil filters, you'll probably want to include a strap wrench in your tool kit. While no...

Seacocks
Jason: You can download an owners manual right from this website. It has instructions on how to maintain seacocks, along with lots of other helpful information. Also, if you do a search for seacocks on the website, you'll get tons of additionally useful information. Reards, Tony Jeske CD-28 #365 NO ...

Gel Batteries
Hi: I would strongly suggest you look into gel batteries instead of AGM. Gel batteries are much more resistant to overcharging and similar abuse. Their recharge cycle is very similar to a wet cell cycle, so you don't have to replace your on board wet cell based charger, etc. I used to work for Offsh...

Frequently swapping
Hi: I never leave my paddle impeller in when I'm not sailing. On my current boat, a CD-28, the impeller is located in the bilge, it's easy to get to it, located right below the access panel in the sole. Yes, it's a little scary at first, but that adrenaline rush goes away after you've swapped it a f...

My Favorite Cape Dory Photo
Hi: Here I am on February 28th, racing my CD-28, NO REGRETS, in San Diego Bay. Even though it's not especially windy, (note slight angles of heel) you'll notice these boats are BEHIND me! Jib Sheets
Hi: While a thinner line is strong enough, I feel a line with enough diameter to give some "hand" while you're using it is important. I'd give some serious thought to a whisker pole. Once you have it, I think you'll be happy that you have one. A good pole will last just about forever, so y...

Mainsheet traveller
Steve: I think you'll be disappointed if you spend a lot on money on blocks, etc. for a traveller and don't change out the track. I put a Harken traveller system on my CD-28. The main reason I choose Harken was that the mounting holes on the new track have the same spacing as the holes on the old tr...

Larger Genoa
Phil & Sharon:
Yes, I believe a bigger genoa is a must on our heavy Cape Dorys.
Let's face it, our boats aren't good in light air, we need all the help we can get and a bigger genoa REALLY helps!
Good Luck,

Seacock Grease
If you search the archives, you'll find a lot on this subject. I have not had especially good reults with the Spartan Seacock grease. The consenus is to use Morey's Red, available at auto supply stores. However, the maintenance kit does include lapping compound and a wrench(s), which you may find us...
