Roller Furling

When I broke my mast 3 weeks ago my Hood roller furling tube got bent at its intersections. The tube is 1 1/8 diameter aluminum, and I have not been able to find replacement. What roller furled system do you use, and why? I looked at Harken cruising (round) and racing (tapered) and the latter requir...

Re: TY Senior New Mast and Foresail Roller Reefing

Thank you very much. I have checked with Dwyer and they have exactly the section and the parts I need for the Typhoon Senior (mast section DM450 $766.50 plus all the other parts other than stay and shrouds $470) all laid out on their web site in an easy-to-follow format with prices for each item. Th...

TY Senior New Mast and Foresail Roller Reefing

In a race last Monday in a 20kt breeze as I tacked to a port tack the inner port shroud failed, putting all the pressure on the port spreader which broke the mast at the spreaders and down came the mast. No one was hurt, as the rig fell to leeward. Also, to my happy surprise, the tabernacle was not ...

Re: TY Senior Motor Well

Re: TY Senior Motor Well

Thanks Gary. My motor is a Mercury (Tohatsu) 4HP 4-stroke long shaft that weighs 58 pounds empty. In my sailing area (coastal South Carolina) the crud build-up below water is fast and intense, so what I plan is any time I am going to be a wqeek or more away from the boat, I'll haul up the motor, wit...

TY Senior Motor Well

My biggest question about the TY Senior is the design of the outboard motor well. The literature about this boat bragged about the tilt-in outboard well and keeping the motor dry. Well, mine does not have any kind of tilt feature, and it looks like the motor is destined to keep its lower unit in the...

Re: TY Senior Sails

Thanks. I have never been a fan of roller reefing but thought I would give out a shot on this boat since it is mainly for cruising and all the CD 22s apparently came with roller. I do like the idea of a reef point on the genny as being a better option than rolling in strong weather on a beat if this...

Re: TY Senior Sails

Thanks. I had thought these boats reefed the main by rolling the boom and so loose foot wold not work well in that case. It turns out that the Senior has a jiffy-reefing set-up so I'll go with loose-foot, full top batten (or 2?) and 2 reef points. About what would be the ideal % genoa in 12 to 15 kt...

TY Senior Sails

I think the sails that came with my new (1985) TY Senior might be the originals, made by Horizon, called "Horizon 2000). They look pretty worn. The main has 4 full-length battens and two reefing rows. The main attached to the mast and boom using nylon bullets. The genny is, I think, a 160. The ...

Typhoon Senior: Many Questions

I am the new owner of a TY Senior built 1985. I have several questions: 1. Motor: The boat came with a new Mercury (Tohatsu) 4 HP/4-cycle outboard. The issues is that it seems to have to remain constantly in the water, unable to tilt out or rise out when not in use. Was it designed this way? Has any...

Re: Classic Boat Rally for Typhoons

Mark So far, yours would be the second Typhoon to sign up. The other belongs to Gerald (Jerry) Wadley, PhD, a resident of Beaufort who, coincidentally, needs new sails. Where are you getting yours? I'll advise Jerry. You will find this trip to be a total blast, with great sailing during the days and...

Classic Boat Rally for Typhoons

The "SBC" Classic Boat Rally will be May 3 - 10, 2007, starting in Savannah, GA, and ending in Charleston, SC. There are five sailing legs of about 30 miles each, up the ICW, plus a lay day in Beaufort, SC. Hence, S-B-C. Each night is spent ashore in homes or hotels (or, if you wish, in yo...
