I am the new owner of a TY Senior built 1985. I have several questions:
1. Motor: The boat came with a new Mercury (Tohatsu) 4 HP/4-cycle outboard. The issues is that it seems to have to remain constantly in the water, unable to tilt out or rise out when not in use. Was it designed this way? Has anyone figured out the best way to easily get it out of the water other than lifting it out and lying it down on the cockpit sole?
2. Sail plan: The boat came with a roller reefed 160 genoa. While I have not taker her out yet, it seems that in a moderate breeze one would never go to windward with the sail fully deployed, yet it seems that the shape would not be efficient on beats being reefed a third n its roller (for the cruiser this probably does not matter, but I have been a racer most of my life and just can't stand an inefficient rig). It seems to me that the genny should be about a 120 and, for off-wind, a gennaker should be deployed. Any thoughts?
3. Gennaker: I like the ease of use of a cruising spinnaker (gennaker or A-sail) when there is adequate separation of the A-sail from the forestay. I have successfully used a Seldon retractable bow sprit on a Compac 16 and a Flicka 20 to achieve the desired separation. Has anyone tried an A-sail on a TY 22, with or without a sprit? Comments?
4. Spinnaker: an alternative to the A-sail is a traditional spinnaker. My mast did not come with a sheave set-up for a spinnaker, and to be honest, I'm not sure this rig could handle one. The questions are: A. Can the rig handle a spinnaker, and B. How far above the jib sheave should the spinnaker sheave be located?
