Adhesive remover "un-du"

Very very successful with no residue removing pressure sensitive adhesives. See http://www.un-du.net/index.php

Dry flush valve setting

Don't leave the handle in the "flush dry" position. The small plastic valve insert will set in this position and will need replacing within a couple months. Yes, leaving in other position will allow the bowl to overflow. Yes, shut the inlet seacock when not in use.

Wear your lifejacket always

http://www.wbaltv.com/news/16357254/detail.html We were in that race last night, when a squall hit with winds slowly building to about 30 knots with puffs beyond that. The Alberg 30 was quite well-behaved, although knocked flat a few times, until we got the genoa furled. Other boats had much more tr...

Epoxy and UV

I used West System 105 resin with 207 hardener on our dinghy, spars, seats, planks, etc. Came out great, clear with very little darkening. The 206 hardener darkens the grain a bit. Even though the 207 contains UV inhibitors, West suggests overcoating with a good varnish with UV inhibitors. I plan to...

Whale pump handle

The handle diameter is 5/8" and McMaster-Carr has anodized aluminum rod 12" long for $7.83 each part number 6750K171. Enough for 2 handles. Back in business.

CD28 bilge pump handle help

Original whale gusher 8 diaphragm pump. The pump handle grew legs and walked away over the winter. More likely that I hid it in a really good place.

Anybody know the shaft diameter? So I can make a new one.

Thanks.

Tinned wire at McMaster

Try McMaster-Carr at www.mcmaster.com They will cut to length e.g. 7587K017 for brown 20GA tinned wire. They usually give you a couple extra inches. When I was doing industrial wiring harnesses, we would just fax them our wire list on one order, and basically get them to kit the harness for "fr...

Another boat ready to be splashed

Kids have proposed naming this one "Butters", after a character in SouthPark. Don't ask me why. It is a Shellback dinghy 11' 2" long and has a sailing rig. Hardest part building it was making the spars. From a kit supplied by Chesapeake Light Craft in Annapolis. If we build another on...

The boat's getting splashed this week

I just learned how to put photos here. So we're looking forward to more of this. Last fall off Hart-Miller Island in Chesapeake Bay. Pooles Island strait ahead, and if you look really closely, you can see the beautiful fall colors. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/owleng/2411384828/" ...

Painting the teak

On the CD28, I painted the vertical panels under the seats in the cabin, adding a couple openings for doors (later). Removed the port water tank, so now have better inside storage. Makes the cabin much brighter. You don't feel like you're in a cave.

Re: Circular reasoning et al

Darrell: Give me a break, ole buddy. I work full-time, people are lining up outside my office, my coffee keeps going cold, I have a hour drive to work, and an hour back home. I am pleading with you now to go back and read my previous posts . . . . I don't have the time to indulge in this debate with...

. . . and Nigel Warren sez

"the prop will create three times more drag when allowed to rotate than it will when locked"

Re: Einstein to the rescue

Dear Mr SPIBob: Your thought experiment is a good read, but you have an incorrect assumption, to quote: "The effect of the screw prop on the motion of the boat through the water will vary, in a continuum , from maximum propulsion to neutral to maximum drag depending on the direction and rpms of...

In that area, try the stantion bases supporting the lifelines. Reach up behind the liner, or use a mirror to take a look at the backing plates.

And the winner is . . .

Al Levesque stated most eloquently: "A rotating prop has different dynamics than one that is stalled." Thank you for that key to this puzzle, Al. Aha! So a rotating propeller is like an airplane wing that is not stalled, and therefore producing lift, keeping the airplane up in the air, a w...
