Tanzer 22

I have sailed on a Tanzer 22 many times as well as race against them for the past 30 years. This boat sails and feels like a much bigger boat and can handle some pretty stiff breeze and heavy seas. I remember sailing the length of Lake Champlain in 15-25 knots of wind - much of it with the spinnaker...

Drilling into Ty deck and cleats

I too had moisture and rot in the aft deck of my 76 Ty - After removing the hardware (take a photo first) I tapped the deck to find the extent then drilled holes with a 3/8" drill through the top layer only. The balsa was rotten and as I worked away from the center of the damage it got wet then...

Ty wiring

I mounted the West Marine panel in the cabin - port side just forward of the board that holds the porta potty in place. Unfortunately it does get in the way of big feet - therefore do not mount it too close to the cabin sole. I placed the battery under he cockpit between the through hull valves.

hank on jib

Sounds like your Typhoon was in her element! The jib leads on teh cabin top are for the working jib - apparently the one you are currently using. You can move the car on teh track fore and aft to adjust to the wind strength. The optimum angle is generally what looks best however the genberal rule of...

Cetol drying time

Ditto - in Vermont the same is true. Leave one day when cooler until the second and third coats. It takes a week for the Cetol to really firm up unless above 60. What I have found is when cool the Cetol tends to run on vertical surfaces - down onto the deck and seep under the masking tape. Clean it ...

Ty cocpit drains

The photo by Dean is excellent. I had a problem with my TY drains and found that the right angle bronze fitting had been chosked full of decaying leaves from winter storage. After removing the hoses (and replacing the old seacock gate valves) I replaced the hoses with a clear reinforced hose that is...

Ty topping lift and pigtail

There have been many sailors who have used the pigtail for many a casual sail without a problem. I am sure that there would be no problem with hoisting the main while at the mooring, leaving the sheet slack. WHen hoisted, casually tiptoe back to the pigtail and unclip it. Then take the slack out of ...

topping lift on Ty

Under no circumstances would I try to sail or motor for longer distances with the pigtail clipped to the boom. This is for holding the boom while reefing or at the mooring. In fact I am going to add a real topping lift to Victoria to use while reefing (around 15-20 kts) as soon as I uncover the boat...

cd 10 deck hardware

WOW - so there is hope for me as I restore my CD10! I have a cleat on the centerboard trunk that I assume is to attach the centerboard to so it won't go overboard if/when I tip over. Nice job on the boat - what did you paint the hull with?

Soft Spots on Ty

I had exactly the same "soft spots" on my Ty when I first bought her. Turned out that the caulking from the factory didn't completely fill the area under the mainsheet block and the balsa core became saturated with water seeping through the bolt holes. I did the many holes trick and dried ...

typhoon furler

I also recommend that you sail the boat for a season before deciding on a furler. On my Ty I have a CDI FF1 with a 130 genny. I absolutely love it because if you furl it and sail back to the mooring or dock under the main and then discover you still need some headsail all you need to do is unfurl. T...

Ty weekender between the bunks

On my Typhoon I placed a porta potti in this space but will probaboy us it for an anchor locker in the future and only store the porta potti when I plan of spending the night. There is a vertical board with projections and a fiddle on it that support a trapezoidal cover that supports a filler cushio...

Who needs a camera to record this memorable event when you have the picture-perfect memories and words by Carter Brey - well done! This may very well be the beginning of a long slow thawing period - lets hope. I saw the show on VPT and listened to it on VPR and I am sure that it will remain one of t...

trailering a Typhoon

There was a post on this board a year or so ago that identified the balance point somewhere where the keel makes its turn up on the forward edge. I place my Ty on the trailer so that the axle is about 8" aft of the forward curvature of the keel. This gives me a nice trailerability of the Ty. I ...

shaft brake

Right on! Since the prop is creating drag whether it is spinning or not, to reduce the drag I always lock my shaft by putting the transmission in reverse. While on the hard I have premarked the shaft with a stripe of visible paint (on the top of the shaft) so that it relates to having the blade (I h...
