Installing Taller Off-Shore Stanchions

Most boats under 40’ built during the era of our Cape Dories all seem to have 24” tall stanchions. I have always felt 24” is too low for offshore sailing...especially if you find yourself on the lee side. Though I managed with the original stanchions just like everyone else I alswys wanted to upgrade them to 30 inches. I finally tackled the project this past week. I have not sailed with them yet but just being on deck feels much safer. Couple pictures below. Click on the link for the details of the installation. Total cost for the heavy duty brass tubes and solid bronze top fittings from Port Townsend Foundry was $840.

The brass stanchions compliment the boat well.
I have also thought that 30" stanchions were more functional.

Hope to paint and install these composite brackets next year.
Will use 30" x 1 1/4" FRP rods for stanchions. Still need to decided on a material for bulwarks.

Regarding the dodger installed on S/V Far Reach, do you have instructions on how your made it or where did you buy it??. Would like to install something similar on my CD25D-Juno. Does it has ss tubes?? By the way, stanchions look awesome...

Hi Carlos. Thanks. Glad you like it. Smase it myself. Super simple. Uses black irrigation tube I purchased at Lowe’s. Four pieces of UHMW plastic and some shock cord. The material is stamoid. You simple push it forward to make entering and leaving easier.

Looking at the pictures of the dodger, how do you hold it still on top of the companionway while navigating??? Is it screwed to the wood???

Carlos, I cut a piece bronze about 4” long and 3/4” wide and secured it to the end of the irrigation pipe with a couple 1/4-20 fasteners. Then, I secured the pivot point to the bronze insert I installed into the teak with a 1/4”-20 machine screw. See the link and scroll down to the part of the pram hood.

Ok John, will wait for the photos. I like your dodger design a lot, doesn't take much space, and will look good on Juno.
