Welcome

Congratulations, Paul. You've chosen a great boat. I appreciate your documenting the refit in that we can all learn from each other. This is a great board for that. I've enjoyed reading and referring to your dad's books for help with my boats. It has really made a difference. Bob B. CD Typhoon Liber...

Hank on - Roller furling

I had a 27 with hank no sails. We used our storm jib as much as the working jib so it was okay for us. Then, I bought a 25D with roller furling headsail. Not going forward on a pitching bow was really nice. We'd go out and sail when it was "too rough" for larger, less Cape Dory-like boats....

A true luddite

Sorry, but I guess that I am a luddite. We don't have a cell phone. We got one of those pay as you go phones a few years back but everywhere we went on the water, it didn't work anyway. We do have a VHF for communicating with bridges, marinas and other watercraft. I have used cell phones for contact...

One thing we did do that shortened our trip some was to come in 9 ft slough rather than Big Foot Slough channel. The 9ft channel cut off about an hour of travel and is a good entrance channel. The only thing that is difficult is picking out markers against the background of the island. GPS and binoc...

Thanks. It was fun putting it together. Yes, it was right at 48 miles one way. We left from Oriental at 1000 and reached Ocracoke at 1900 on the way over with little wind at first (motoring a couple of hours) but freshening to a working jib and full main. On the way back we left at 0630 and had a li...

Typhoon Outer banks Summer Cruise Video

Here is a trip that my brother and I took from Oriental to Ocracoke that I have put into a better video format than we had before.
Hope you enjoy it.

CD 25D

I addition to the Typhoon, we've had a 25D. This is the best of the small cruisers. The problem is the trailerability. The 25D is not really a trailerable boat like the 25 is. It was great for cruising though and while bigger boats were heading back to the docks because the weather had piped up some...

Outboard

The only drawback to the outboard is in a rough chop. The outboard may clear the water and spin causing it to eventually shear a pin or something of the sort as well as not allowing much headway. I have my second Typhoon where we traveled for a few days last summer. The only drawback was the outboar...

Ocracoke

From my friends on Ocracoke, they are already back on the island and are accessing the island by way of the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter ferries so the channel must be open. All is open to tourists and such. The inlet was cut in Hatteras Island and they had some houses washed away in the process. T...

Sailrite

I refinished a CD 10 last winter and ordered a sail kit from Sailrite. It was pretty easy to put together with just a regular sewing machine and fun to do. They will work with you on colors, reef points, and such.

Trailer

The most important items are tongue weight and that you have at least a little weight on the tongue end of the trailer. Check your car's maual for the tongue weight allowed and get a set of scales and see what you are look at with your trailer and boat position. I don't know if your trailer was made...

I concur with Klem's assessment. We ran tugs in the southern waters and encountered many days of fog bound travel. Rarely would we hear small vessels performing securite calls but we would get some response when we would place them on 16 and 13. In addition to fog situations, we would place securite...

We stayed a few nights earlier this summer. Too hot now. I made a screen for the companionway and we put a fan in the opening. It made it less confined feeling. I like the idea of leveling out the V-berth sides. We just stacked up some food boxes and a boat cushion or two to make the bunk longer. We...
