Re: Unbelievable mileage
maybe that hard racing paint on the bottom is as good as they say, plus I have learnt alot from this and I plan to increase the prop pitch from 8 to 10, I am told that will slow down the prop by 150 rpm and will allow the Yanmar engine to go more slowly to achieve the same hull results. In June I pl...

Re: prop rpm's
John, I love that line about putting the brain in gear ( before hitting the send button). an explaination: When I did the trip I had only two real world measurements the RPM and the GPS readings everything else was from calculations. Plus - I know I used 9.5 gallons because that is how much it told ...

Re: prop rpm's
Boyd, I am not getting any reasonable numbers for this trip I took with a new motor and paint job. I am trying to work out a table that will show both fuel comsume and condition of the bottom/prop. This is a new Yanmar 2 cylinder 15 hp. I'm told I can go up to 3600 but I don't have enough hours yet ...

Re: prop rpm's
You prop should not turn much faster than 1500 rpm at full throttle, hence the transmission ratio of about 2 for most small boat engines. What are you trying to figure out? Slip? which is a value of very limited use? Or evaluating your prop's performance? Boyd s/v Tern CD30 MkII Fort Lauderdale, Fl...

Re: I get 24 Knots
Yes!, there is a 2.62 deductioon gear on this Yanmar Don't you have any gear reduction? 8"X3600revsX1ft.X60min.X1Knot all divided by 1revX1min.X12"X1hrX6000ft. You see all the units cancel out except knots. Do you have any cavitation? that would be my concern, as the slippage seems a bit o...

an efficiecny prop
To the engineers in the group, is this the correct way to calculate slip and how efficient you are using the engine prop combination. for a 13 dia x 8 pitch engine speed is rpm 3600 this gives how many inches per minute the boat would go if there was no slip at all. there is about 6000 ft in a NM th...

Re: Auto switch with direct battery connection
[quote="Joe Boater"]I found this diagram on the web. gram, the float switch goes from battery to panel switch, so you don't need to leave the main battery switch on, The reasoning behind the putting the auto bilge pump on the house battery instead of the start battery is the capacity (size...

L.E.D. power-on lights question
I wired a small blue LED from the master switch to a place above the nav table as a reminder that power is ON . So when I look back to drop the hatch boards in place I can see that all power to master switch is off. Or still left ON The one thing I would like to change is to make that blue LED blink...

Re: Bilge pump wiring
[quote="Dean Abramson"]My automatic bilge pump is wired so that I have to leave the master battery switch on. while on the subject: one mechanic told me I should never put the auto-bilge pump to the start battery but to the house battery. That way you will be able to start the engine even ...

bilge pumps
before embarking on a recent short cruise, I installed a new master bilge pump with built in auto-on switches. One quiet evening while running north with a soft south wind. I was watching Orion Belt come up on the horizon. I heard the bilge pump running, listening for a while and it did not stop. af...

broadband on board question
Has anyone travelled up the intercoastal water-way from the Key West to Sandy Hook with a broadband on board. How was your reception? I have been getting some conflicting information from some of the companies that offer broad band service. Example: one company told me that if I connected to the wea...

pocket size weather fax.
I don't know why I didn't think of this with all the electronic toys on this sailboat of mine. BUT, today a small 26 foot sailboat came to the marina dock and he had one electronic device and only one. It was a tiny 7 inch portable computer. It had a built in full function GPS, and weather fax. It h...

Re: Reefing setup
[quote="Carter Brey"]This year I rigged my boat, which has two reefs, with single-line reefing, and will never go back; I just love it. Carter, So far, I find that your method of single line together with dutch flaking will be best for single handed- cockpit operation. My motto is to alway...
