OJ: I meant to include the source when I posted, but I was operating away from my desk. Source: http://www.oakwoodveneer.com The key is to make an accurate pattern, which I did with heavy craft paper, and then rehearse the glueing sequence since contact cement grabs instantly. One tip: if you misapp...

You might also apply veneer over the laminate. I veneered my cabin with paper-backed teak veneer--can cut with sharp scissors and glue with contact cement. I then varnished it. Here is the result: <a href="http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww230/newlink-sequel/cushions03.jpg"><img width=&...

I faced a similar dilemma in what to do with the wires when I rewired my mast on my CD28. After scouting a number of options on other boats--some quite clunky, such routing the wires through conduit from base of mast to deck--I simply drilled a hole through the mast step plate, then through the stee...

Rebivna: I made a sketch of what I wanted and asked a local canvasworker to meet me at the boat, where I could show him what I wanted it to do. Our discussion focused mainly on support options, and the pic is the result. It's perfect for my needs--never in the way, and I simply look out from under t...

The side braces are adjustable--a set screw secures the fitting, though I've never had reason to move them. You can't really tell by the photo, but the two braces and the bow are held by quick release pins; the bimini itself attaches via zipper.

Here's a photo of a sort-of bimini I had made for my CD28. It provides enough shade to keep me from frying while also enabling me to stand behind it, get out easily to the side decks, and operate the winches.

You might try a product called Marsolve: http://www.marsolve.com/index.html The block on my Volvo MD7A was pretty much clogged, with the temp consistently in the red; after I cycled Marlsolve through it for two hours, the passages opened and the temp is now consistently in the green. You will also f...

As of January 2006, Masonboro Boat Yard has closed and all equipment has been removed--all part of an expansion of the marina. Nearby yards are Bennett Brothers, http://bbyachts.com/ and Wilmington Marine Center, http://www.wilmingtonmarine.com/Default.htm, both on the Cape Fear River near downtown ...

Chase, During the first week of May I made the trip from Wrightsville Beach to Cape Lookout. The problem with a 70 mi trip is that it makes for a very long day. Under sail I was averaging 5 kts or so, but that speed would put me at Cape Lookout after dark, so I ended up motorsailing so I would go fa...

Bob,

I too made a bulkhead mounted fold up table. I used the knob hatch fastner in the above posting, and it worked just fine, nicely robust. I made a brass escutcheon to mount on the table and also drilled a hole to accept a cotter pin--which came in handy because I promptly lost the nut.

drilling a hole in the mast step

I'm about to rewire the mast of my CD 28. I'm thinking of drilling a hole through the mast step and running the wiring into the cabin this way, rather than out through the side of the mast and then through the cabin top. Doing so would keep the connections (and wire) out of the weather. I don't unst...

Bill, I didn't recut the main. I find that for me, at 5'10", there's plenty of room under the bimini; it's only slightly lower than the boom. The key is the standing area aft of the boom, which allows plenty of room to stand, steer, and see over the bimini, when I get tired of sitting, which is...

CD28 bimini

In North Carolina, one broils in the summer sun. Here's a link to a bimini I designed and had a canvas maker make that leaves room to stand aft of the bimini. There's enough shade, and access to the side decks and winches is clear.

Last fall I repacked the stuffing box of my CD28 while in my slip. The water ingress is fairly minor, at least on my boat, with a two-year-old shaft and cutless bearing. My existing packing had compressed so much that further tightening did no good to slow the drip, and it took considerable time to ...
