Re: Radar Alarm Amplifier
I've got the radar taken apart, and I was able to remove the buzzer. However, it has no markings at all. Is there some way of determining what I could replace it with that would be louder? I'm assuming there's some kind of amperage and voltage rating, but I don't know what it is, or if there are oth...

Radar Alarm Amplifier
I have a radar with the ability to set a perimeter alarm. I've tested it and it works great! I'd like to use it when single-handing, but have noticed that I can't hear it with the diesel running (which is when I'd mostly use it, because I wouldn't have to worry about the battery). Any tips on modify...

Re: 25D windward ability?
How big is your genoa and how much did you try to furl it when you were beating into 15 kts? Were you able to switch a smaller jib onto your furler and did that help? I'd encourage you to read that other thread I referenced earlier. It's a 150. I furled it to about half it's size, which meant it wa...

Re: 25D windward ability?
Well... if you can do 6 knots 50 degrees off true wind, that's 3.85 VMG.... so 3.5 isn't bad at all if you ask me. My old IOR boat with old massive headsails can't do much better. I imagine in chop a big 25D can punch through a bit better. 3.5 would be with no waves. Without the lift that comes fro...

Re: 25D windward ability?
Not that great for pointing, in my experience. VMG of 3-3.5 kts (depending on waves) at 10 kts wind with careful sail trim would be reasonable. Just finished discussing something similar here: http://capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38752

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves
I decided to give a smaller working jib a try. You do give up a little speed and esp power vs chop when the wind is below 10 kts (1/2 Kt ??) but right at about 12 knots the 100 is pulling me along just as well as either larger jib, and then at 15+ knots it's pretty clear to me that Alberg designed ...

Re: Settings for pilot and idle jet screws, Tohatsu outboard
I don't have this particular motor, but I have typically seen these values in the service manual. If you don't have it but live near a Tohatsu dealer you might be able to get an answer by asking at the counter (and presumably buying something).

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves
I'd say your thinking is reasonable. You seem to have a pretty good grip on what you are doing. Thanks for the kind words! There is no getting around that old sail though. I would say if you had a smaller furling jib (say a 130) I think you can furl it down a bit more after you go to the double ree...

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves
Thanks again John. I really appreciate your thoughts. I especially appreciate this (below), which is great. I read a similar version of this in one of Vigor's books which I'm hoping to think more about this winter. I've annotated your comments with the wind speed I would expect to want to do these t...

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves
Thanks John - it's really good to hear from your experience. Your idea of a solent stay is good but a lot of work for the little you might use it. You're probably right. Taking the 20 minutes to change out the headsail probably makes more sense. A single reef in the main is not enough thus the Lee h...

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves
Using these sail combinations, you should be able to beat upwind against 25-knot winds and steep chop. You'll be slogging along, and you won't point very high--but your 25D should be able to handle it if you can. Joe, what angle are you able to point in these conditions, and what VMG can you achiev...

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves
You mean you change sails in the furler? Guess that's doable. Takes you about what - 20 minutes? And, for best heavy-weather performance, I will change to my so-called "storm jib," which is probably 100%

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves
Fritz, here's an article you might be interested in, from Practical Sailor - Jean Thanks Jean - this article is great, and now I have a word (solent staysail) for what I'd like to try! I'd like to try this first because I have the necessary gear so it would be essentially free. I do see your point ...

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves
Is that true even if you run the second halyard to the masthead and only use it when the genoa is furled?Adding a staysail gets complicated. You have to think about running backstays to support the mast,
additional deck and mast hardware etc.
