Re: DIY Asymmetrical Stow/Launch Bag

Thanks for the info and the photo. My main reason for having the bag on the foredeck is to avoid carrying it forward from a cockpit locker or companionway. If it's at hand then maybe I'll use it more often. Because I plan to keep it on deck all the time I'll probably tie it down to stanchion bases t...

Re: DIY Asymmetrical Stow/Launch Bag

Hi Paul. How did your spinnaker bag work out? How do you secure it on deck? I recently purchased a vinyl(?) waterproof travel luggage type bag for this purpose. I'm trying to design a process so that the spinnaker doesn't get twisted when I secure the tack and clew and raise the sock. I'm considerin...

Re: Small Jib

In addition to the reasons you listed, I didn't want the jib to rub or hang up on the shrouds when I tacked so I had my hank-on working jib cut down to about an 80%. For winds under 5 knots I carry a light weight cruising spinnaker. I've used this combination for about a year, sailing Lake Michigan ...

Re: Ground Tackle Options and Handling - Cape Dory 27

Spade anchor. A guy borrowed a dozen different anchors, tied a go-pro camera to each one as he deployed them on short scope, then tried to drag each one with his powerboat. He put the videos on youtube. You can search for the video and actually see how each anchor performed. Convinced me to get a sp...

Re: What size (as a percent of foretriangle) is your working

Thanks for your comments Fred, gonesail, kerrydeare and John. John, I'd like to confirm how your staysail is set up. It seems you have 3 clew cringles, one in the corner of the sail and 2 for reefing. How far apart are the clew cringles? Do you use the same tack cringle for all 3 positions or are th...

Re: Dinghy Boarding Step Design and Build

John, Your boarding step looks great. Do you still use it? Question: If the outer lines extended downward as a rope ladder with wooden steps, do you think it would work as a swim ladder also? What do you use for a swim ladder? I'm looking for a swim ladder for my CD 26 - it has a windvane installed ...

Re: What size (as a percent of foretriangle) is your working

Thanks for all the responses. I'm reassured that a jib with reef is practical. I just need to decide the size of the jib and the shape of the reef. John, Thanks for the photo of your reefed staysail. That was very encouraging. It also shows a high clew that I am considering. Maybe someday I'll conve...

Re: Cockpit locker hinge

For varnish - There's a new version of Cetol called Natural Teak that looks really good and should last 2 years in the South, maybe 3 years up North.

Re: a dirty bilge...

Clorox cleanup. Instead of the spray bottle buy the refill jug, drill 3 small holes in the lid then shake to pour. Apply to small area, wait a few minutes (important) then wipe clean with sponge before rinsing with hose.

Then fix the deck leaks that allow water into the bilge.

What size (as a percent of foretriangle) is your working jib

I ordered a 100% hank-on jib but the sailmaker sent me a 110% anyway. We discussed it and he offered to cut it down for free after I tried the 110. Well, I've tried it for a few months and I still think I want a 100% or even a 90% non-overlapping jib. What size do you use? I don't need the working j...

Thanks for the info. It's good to know about your jib. I'm going to try to correct the one I have but if that doesn't work I'll contact you about yours.

Re: Experience with Storm Jib? (CD 26)

Thanks for your input. I don't have a sailmaker locally (Atlanta, Georgia) so over the years I have ordered sails (main, jib, spinnaker) over the phone from different dealers, some domestic, some foreign and it's usually not a problem. This is the first time I had a problem, probably because they do...

Re: Experience with Storm Jib? (CD 26)

I own a Cape Dory 26. Thanks again for your responses. I'll attach pennants and see how that works. The ultimate solution may be to work with a sailmaker who is familiar with the boat.

Re: Experience with Storm Jib? (CD 26)

Jim, Thanks for your reply. My boat has two tracks on each side for movable sheet blocks, a genoa track aft of the mast and a smaller track forward of the mast. Do storm jib sheets typically run to blocks that are forward of the mast?
