Re: Advice for new owner of a Cape Dory 22

Glad to know of another Cape Dory sailor on Lake Champlain. We sail our '71 Ty out of Burlington. We use a 2HP Honda and don't presume it will be enough if the waves really kick up, but we don't usually get far out in the broad lake either as we also are very mindful of that long fetch. Will be curi...

Re: typhoon weekender shroud specs

'71 Weekender owner here- I have found that the best results come from sending the rigger the old shrouds and generally relying on the rigger for the specifics of fabrication (and measurements). I really didn't want to get measurements wrong....

Good experience with Rigging Only in Fairhaven, Mass.

Well done and very clear - excellent solution.

Re: Dry Sailing vs. Mooring

Our first year with our Typhoon I was too late in the season to secure a mooring or a slip at the municipal marina at any price, ...so trailer launched at a nearby but not so convenient ramp. I got better through the summer, but the time associated with transporting, raising the mast, launching, ret...

Re: Santa Came Early

Beautiful boat, will be sorry to see the Lake Champlain fleet diminished. As for trucking costs, with no mast to lower to get under the canal bridges its perfectly practicable to head south on the Champlain & Hudson canal and then down the Hudson to NYC before a hard turn to port and up the coas...

Re: roller furler for Typhoon

We sail our TY on Lake Champlain and have found the CDI furler to be trouble free and reliable. It is an older version, so I can't speak to recent models, but am aware of no concerns. I single-hand much of the time, and absolutely appreciate the POs decision to install the furler - for me, I have le...

Re: Replicating V-Berth Insert for CD Typhoon Weekender

So, good excuse to open up the tarps even though we are still two months from getting into the water. Here is a photo of the insert from my '71. Note that it's only a 1/2 inch think, and it sets in place by the use of three cleats on the underside. Width towards the stern is 15', length is 18'. Hope...

Re: Winch Maintenance - 1971 Typhoon

With a little extra encouragement, it came apart easily enough and all in good shape. Perhaps I failed to give the PO enough credit but now straightforward and simple.

Thanks all.

Re: Winch Maintenance - 1971 Typhoon

I am more than a little bit reluctant to start in on this. I have no experience in winch repair or maintenance, and my initial attempt at loosening/unscrewing with the winch handle was not a success - it didn't budge. Not sure if I should be trying to apply some heat as a first step, or in combinati...

Re: Winch Maintenance - 1971 Typhoon

Thanks, now that I have the winch handle I see the WC mark confirming its a Wilcox-Crittenden, so that's progress. Now I just have to figure out how to get it loose enough to take apart - I have no idea how many years its been since its had any attention.

Winch Maintenance - 1971 Typhoon

Can anyone tell me anything about this winch from my 1971 Typhoon? How to dismantle, what I will find inside, how to lubricate?

Not sure this is original, but it seems to be. No markings or model numbers....

Thanks for any info.

Re: working jib sheet

I use a furling jib on my Typhoon, and whether I lead the jib sheets inboard of the shrouds and through the fairlead on the cabin top very much depends on expected wind and direction. I find the Typhoon points better with inboard jib sheets but concede that I am not trying to squeeze extra speed whe...

Re: New Typhoon Owner - Lake Champlain

Thanks, Dick. I've been keeping a close eye on the water level in Lake Champlain and its a bit discouraging so early in the summer. I will be moving to a more permanent mooring shortly rather than trailering so much, but it would be nice to have the confidence in a good long steep ramp to avoid just...

Re: New Typhoon Owner - Lake Champlain Launch Success

So here's an update as of this weekend: A successful trailer launch at Converse Bay on Lake Champlain using the ramp at Cedar Beach in Charlotte, Vermont - just south of Burlington. The concrete ramp is in good shape, and long enough after a recent reconstruction a few years ago that with a tongue e...
