Re: CD25D fuel level
... I carry five gallons on deck... when I'm down by that (around half a tank) I fill from the jug and row the empty jug to the fuel dock ... Neil, one of the neatest pieces of kit I encountered was the "auto-syphon" tube. It was an unexpected gift from out of the blue. Thing is, this all...

From Practical Sailor: The Ego-trap of Riding the Storm Out
Interesting article on the dangers of certain storm tactics. I did this during H. Gloria in 1985. Nowadays I wonder what in the world I was thinking. Note the URL may require that the reader sign in to PS.

Re: Shaft Alignment - CD30, Volvo MD7A
... It seems to me that with a PSS seal and a conventional cutlass bearing, the prop shaft would still be able to move up and down and sideways. The only guiding being done in that case is with the rubber inside the cutlass bearing ... I can only report my individual experience. The new cutlass (of...

Re: Shaft Alignment - CD30, Volvo MD7A
You are surmising correctly that the shaft will normally drop - even with a new cutlass bearing. The bearing is only rubber and can't be expected to hold the shaft in alignment that far away ... We had a different result with the CD 28. That may be due to the shaft being shorter, but I am not certa...

Re: Shaft Alignment - CD30, Volvo MD7A
Kerrydeare, thanks for the clarification and the suggestion of PSS. What you’re saying makes sense and is well worth serious consideration. I can’t wait to get the boat hauled to figure out what my real problems are. This is far from a simple issue because we are dealing with gear that can sink the...

Re: Shaft Alignment - CD30, Volvo MD7A
Kerrydeare, I didn’t realize that the PSS would allow a little more misalignment than the traditional stuffing box ... I don’t understand what you mean by “hard mounted to the hull” ... I suspect my description itself was less than ideal, and I will try to be more clear and precise. In the old or f...

Re: Shaft Alignment - CD30, Volvo MD7A
... checking the propeller shaft for alignment ... I decided to check mine today ... I removed the bolts to separate the two mounting flanges. I then pushed the prop back, disconnecting the two. When I did this, the shaft dropped about 1/2 an inch ... I will not contradict others who have responded...

Re: Cape Dory Traveler Question
Here's what I did on my CD30. I added a new more robust car, two double blocks, six turning blocks and the two lines. I'm very happy with it ... From the pictures I can see why you would be very happy with it. Excellent job, and one that indicates you are not parting with this vessel any time soon....

Re: Cape Dory Traveler Question
On my CD 30 MK2 (1989) traveler I don't have the ability to move it side to side from the cockpit and wondered if there was a way to adapt the existing traveler so that I could have a line on both sides that come back to the cockpit. Appreciate any advice and hope everyone is staying safe and healt...

Re: MD7A Oil Change
Agreed! I hope to never replace mine. We’ll see. So far she sounds and seems to run great. I think there is something cool about trying to keep a 40 year old engine running. What I need to start doing though is rust protection on the outside. I guess I’ll start a new thread to discuss how everyone ...

Re: Outboard on CD 25D?
I suspect you may by this time have concluded that you are dealing with an insane, old, cantankerous individual who thinks his opinions are quite important. I don't think being an insane old cantankerous individual who thinks his opinions are quite important is relevant even if it is true. I think ...

Re: Outboard on CD 25D?
I did the ICW in 1972 and returned in 73. I still remember those canals as being long and boring. Hours and hours of hand steering in a straight line with nothing to see but the trees on the banks. Dark tanen stained water and very little breeze. Unlike a forest path, the banks are far enough apart...
