Re: Reefing while underway
Tying off the tiller then going to the mast to reef sounds slightly suicidal to me. A tiller pilot works ok but as a single hander I find heaving too the safest and easiest option. The whole act of heaving too and returning to sailing is made so much easier if you gybe out of it to your previous cou...

Re: CD25D mast step
Thankyou Roberto, well received. The hinged base plate was installed 2014 so I guess it was a replacement for the original.
Thank you again.
Thank you again.

CD25D mast step
Selling my CD25D (1982) and I was asked an interesting question by a prospective buyer. My mast is deck stepped and hinged for easy lowering and trailering. My question is whether this was the original design or was the mast originally keel stepped? The guy seemed to think that all 25Ds were origina...

CD 25D and trailer for sale in Canada, SOLD
1982 Cape Dory 25D extensively refitted in 2007 with new mast, rigging, engine, trans, prop shaft, sails, all receipts on hand. Boat was subsequently cruised in fresh water in Oregon and BC interior. This is one tough little boat that will take you anywhere. Sitting on a good quality custom trailer ...

Re: Chart Plotter and Radar Update Choice
There are many excellent options for electronic navigation out there, to fit any budget from the basic handheld to the most sophisticated integrated nav systems. Each one of us should pick the one that suits their style and budget. My personal preference is for simplicity and economy but that does n...

Re: CD 25D Hairline cracks on deck house near mast
When drilling holes in the pad fwd of mast base to install new sockets it was plain to see that the deck in that spot was solid fibreglass as per proper construction and design. If yours is the same it would not be possible for a leak to reach the deck core. Plus 1 for the Loos gauge. The best $100 ...

Re: Chart Plotter and Radar Update Choice
2 thumbs up for Navionics. Ipad for the critical stuff, iphone in my pocket just in case. Used sensibly in conjunction with pilot books and cruising guides gets me anywhere I want to go. Cheap, simple and reliable. I have a small garmin integrated plotter in my cockpit and the only thing I use it fo...

Re: Inspection hatch in 25D
Thank you Robert most helpful. It seems like I have 2 choices. Either fit a hatch or take the boat to a smaller mechanic. The next nearest yard is 50 miles away. That means get the boat there on the trailer, pay a tiny mechanic to pull the shaft to check it is straight, put in the water, rig the mas...

Re: Inspection hatch in 25D
You are quite right, the boat needs to be in the water when the alignment is done. Job 1 is to pull the shaft and make sure it is not bent. The vibration is insane. Anything over 2500 rpm is not sustainable. I have pulled the prop off and checked the balance, it was fine so that is not the cause. Ha...

Inspection hatch in 25D
Need to get in to the back of the engine to release the shaft and check alignment. Boat is out of the water and I measure about 1/8" deflection when I turn the prop. Vibration is teeth rattling. I am too old and fat to get in there through the port locker and so is the mechanic. I am considerin...

Re: Adding Ballast Aft?
If I wanted to add 75-100 lbs to the stern of my 25D I would stuff a teenage cheerleader in the port locker. Extra ballast and the only human form that can get to the stern gland.

Re: 25D seacock grease
I just did all 4 sea engine bay sea cocks on my 25D this fall. I found doing the port side ones were much easier after I removed the sink. Generally they were not that hard to get to, not nearly as hard as the engine zinc (Yanmar). The biggest problem I had was removing the through hulls from the ou...
