Re: Winter cover frame
I tarp my Ty and have gotten reasonably successful at it. I store the mast on the boat and use it as the horizontal support for the tarp. In my experience, the frame isn't the most important part, as long as it's sufficient to hold up the mast. Rule #1 is to get the peak high enough to shed snow (sh...

Re: Is it safe to put this in the water?
Congrats! Yes, launching a Typhoon calls for a deep ramp, a long trailer extension, or both. Or a willingness to get the launch vehicle pretty wet.
If your boom is set up like most Tys, the gooseneck fitting slips into the sail track on the mast.

Re: Is it safe to put this in the water?
Congrats on the new-to-you Typhoon! I gather the previous owners sailed it on a very shallow lake? ;) I don't have any helpful advice, but here are my two cents anyhow: That damage doesn't look like a safety issue to me, although you should give the rudder a close inspection to make sure it isn't ab...

Re: Typhoon Cabin
My '78 Typhoon has knees, but not like those. On mine, the cabin sole, berths, and inner liner all are one piece. I wonder if a previous owner cut down your liner in order to add some knees? Or possibly that's just how Cape Dory built the cabin for some part of the model's history. P.S. Don't be dec...

Re: motoring into a fresh breeze
One other question--what do you folks do in the moment if an unexpected gust pushes you way over while close-hauled and buries the rail and you just want to stand her back up a bit. Ease the main sheet? Fall off a bit? Or head up into the wind to spill wind from your sails, which is probably what y...

Re: Boom Drain
Tangent: I crew on a Tartan 4100 in our local beer-can races. It has a big Park Avenue-style boom (the top of the boom is shaped like a wide gutter to catch and store the main). Whenever we get a good rain storm several GALLONS of water will accumulate in the boom and in the folds of the sail. Lifti...

Typhoon on CL - Michigan
There's a nice-looking Typhoon with recent sails, outboard, and trailer posted on Craigslist in the Detroit area. They're asking $5,500 for it. Seems like a reasonable price for a nice package. I'm not affiliated in any way with the listing, but wanted to share it: https://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb...

Re: Typhoon differences between Weekender and Daysailer vers
Just to be clear (at least, I hope I'm clarifying things) I think Jim was suggesting a bilge pump for the Daysailer, not the Weekender. The Weekender closes up tight enough that a bilge pump isn't necessary, at least in my opinion. I wouldn't worry too much about the sailing differences between the ...

No I didn't know the Daysailor was not self bailing. And I will admit that I didn't know the Weekender was self bailing either. I'm in learning mode here so please don't assume I know something. :) For the folks who moor on a buoy or are dockside, are you're a using small battery powered bilge pump...

Re: The Log of Typhoon "Dory"
I've been appreciating your posts, Jim, although with a tinge of jealousy. I try to distract myself from that by paying attention to the details in your photos. I notice that you seem to have your leads tuned about where I do--right at the forward end of their travel. I notice also that your jib she...

Re: New to List, Looking at Cape Dory Typhoon - Have Questio
One difference to consider that isn't obvious at first glance is that the Daysailor's cockpit is not self-draining, while the Weedender's is. The rigs are different too. The Daysailor is a masthead rig, versus a fractional rig on the Weekender. I"ve never sailed a Daysailer I'm not sure if the...

Re: New to List, Looking at Cape Dory Typhoon - Have Questio
The Typhoon is definitely worth a look. I've single-handed mine a lot and it's never an issue. I'd second radsailor's recommendation of a working jib. Unless you sail mostly in very light winds (< 5 knots) you don't need anything bigger and the smaller jib is very easy to handle, trim, and store. Se...

Re: Dry Sailing vs. Mooring
Ah, there it is, sorry, I must have skipped over that part of your post. You're possibly missing a step where you unhitch your tow vehicle from the trailer and go park it elsewhere, but that's not a big item in the grand scheme of things. Unless your mooring is a 30-minute row from shore, I think it...
