Oil spill
Hey John, No worries. Eleanor was berthed at the marina when a large working vessel rammed into the oil tanker off Singapore East Coast, spilt 2500 tonnes of crude. Nothing compared to the Gulf, but due the close proximity of the collision to the marina, crude got into the marina before anybody coul...

Always check around
We have a WM distributor here in Singapore and we do patronize her alot. We dont like that, and we do that only when we have no better alternatives. Recently, we bought 2 Whale foot pumps at a local shop at 30% off WM price. Thats saving $50! Now we are pricing tinned 12 gauge wires. We like the Anc...

Green!
Guys! I am so green with envy.
Feeling so bad that I cant just jump onboard and sail away on Eleanor rightaway! She's on the hard and needing more attention than I can give right now, but I'll be back and sailing again on that sweet lil' typhoon!

What should be the permissiable age to sail solo?
What can stop a person taking their own boat out to sea? The parent? The courts? Like I am older than 30, and I own my boat and I want to go on a weekend trip on my little Eleanor and my parents object. Should they be allowed to go to court and stop me? If the legal driving age is 16, a parent cant ...

Same problem
My chainplates popped out when I raised Eleanors' mast in 2004. It was my 1st time raising mast and may have gotten the shrouds too tight. Was good to have that problem happen to me then, otherwise it would not have occured to me to check. On investigation, found the stainless bolts were completely ...

Thanks Dave
From your question on my blog: I guess we wont really know if its gelcoat or paint blisters if they dont burst. We use a metal scraper to get the growth off. Might have been a little more aggressive in some spots, which burst the blisters. If it were just paint blisters, then I would expect to see g...

Careening and bottom painting
I have just done the bottom on Eleanor. It was quite easy really. If you are interested, check out my blog for details. http://funvinyldecals.wordpress.com/2010/04/11/painting-sv-eleanors-bottom/ <a href="http://funvinyldecals.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/port_lean6.jpg" target="_blank...

Re: TY anchoring
Lang, Years ago I used a "folding grapnel anchor" on my Ty Weekender. Yes, I know that technically they aren't supposed to work well in some conditions, but I used it a lot and it never dragged. The nice thing it that it took up little space when folded, and it was easy to deploy. I would...

Thanks for the replies.
Thanks for the great advises. I thought about some of the points that were shared here and sort of tried to work out a system.. I made a prototype for testing. It is not working well, but I am sharing the new info and pictures on my blog for all my sailing friends to comment and critique. Do visit a...

Suzuki O/B
Sea hunt, I use a brand new 5HP 4 stroke Suzuki on Eleanor. I had that same problem you described, even here in Asia. I do not think that our fuel here contain Ethanol. Last year, a mechanically inclined boater help me service O/B. He removed every component in the fuel.. (almost) .. and cleaned it ...

where to store anchor on Typhoon?
Ahoy Typhoon sailors! I am getting Eleanor ready for next years' adventure sail to Tioman (somewhere in the South China sea). Currently, I am looking at how I might have 2 ready to deploy anchors stowed on deck. I would be single handing, so I am thinking about a system where I can deploy and retrie...

spliced mast
Replacing a mast is alot more complicated than I thought. The mast on our BCC was severely damaged in the tsunami 2004. We contacted forespar for a replacement mast, and they wanted $8000 for the mast, mill finish. Which means we have to pay $5000 to ship over to Asia and then $2000 to paint. There ...

Looking at the pictures I noticed a couple of things. The first is that you might want to raise the spreaders a bit so they bisect the angle of the shrouds. The second is that the TY you are looking at has the bolt in knees inside of the cabin. These seem like they were an add on to the later TYs t...

Hey, I ought to mention this. He is US citizen, lived mostly in California. He left the US nearly 10 yrs ago, sailing his BCC to Asia. We were hit by the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004 and are still repairing his BCC. Suitable replacement spreaders and spruce for bowsprit are just not available in Asi...
