Re: New sails suggestions for a Typhoon
In theory a hank-on jib will point a little better than a roller-furled sail, but IMHO the difference isn't worth the flexibility and ease of reefing and stowing that a roller-furler gives you. Moreover, all of that can be done from the cockpit, which is much, much safer than handling a hank-on, esp...

Re: Typhoon halyards & jib sheets
My Ty has two jam cleats on either side of the cuddy roof which were originally intended for the jib sheets, but which became available when a p.o. rigged her for a roller furled genoa with tracked blocks and horn cleats on the coamings. I now use one of the rooftop jam cleats for the halyard and I ...

Re: New sails suggestions for a Typhoon
I bought a new mainsail for my Typhoon Weekender last year from Bonhndell Sails in Rockport, ME. They persuaded me to go with a loose-footed sail and I have been very, very happy with the decision.

New mainsail for my Ty
My Typhoon needed a new mainsail and on advice of a couple of local sailmakers I decided to go loose-footed. I've had Dolcetto out twice (now that it's stopped raining) and I couldn't be happier with the new sail. I'm getting at least half a knot more out of her than I did with the old sail. Rigging...

Re: Loose-footed main for a Typhoon
Thanks for the advice. I talked it over with Doug Pope, the Rockland ME sailmaker, who pointed out that "there's no downside to a loose-footed sail. If you don't want to be making adjustments you can always just set the outhaul where you'd usually have the clew and leave it alone." He told...

Loose-footed main for a Typhoon
A friend who sails a Dolphin 24 needs a new main and was advised by a local sailmaker to go loose-footed. "Try it, you'll never go back." she told him. If you din't like it I can always put in the slugs later." This is most definitely the last season for the mainsail on my Typhoon. As...

Re: Hurricane Season 2022
Not great news for sailing, but up here in Maine we sure could use some rain.

Re: Haven at end of sailing life?
Mike, I've seen Haven moored at Merchant's Landing--I'm the little Typhoon that's been mooring there for the past eight years. If you can't get Skip to look at the engine I think I could get Cliff D (he's got Maya Elena , the Dolphin 24) to give it a look-see. He's not a mechanic but has a fair amou...

Re: Pulpit Harbor (Maine) report
Penobscot Bay is sailing Valhalla indeed! I sail out of Sprucehead Island on the Muscle Ridge channel and pass by the Dix Island anchorage mentioned by Carl all the time. It's a lovely spot and much visited in the summer. There used to be a woman who would come out and sell lobster dinners to people...

Re: Typhoon Weekender outboard weight
I've had good experiences with both the Honda 2.3 and the Yamaha 2.5 motors, which are reasonably light and adequate to push me along at 5 kts. Whatever you get, be sure to get one with long shaft ! It's a fair drop from the transom to the water. The Honda long shaft is a little longer than the Yama...

Re: Correct CDI for Typhoon Weekender
My Weekender came with a CDI Flexible Furler 1 and it has proven perfectly adequate. I don't know if they make them anymore, but I believe it's the bottom of the line and should be the least expensive of the lot.

Re: Honda or Tohatsu outboard for dinghy
I've used both the Honda and Suzuki 4-strokes as the stinkpot on my Typhoon. They both performed very well. If it's just for a dinghy, I'd say go with the lighter, cheaper, Suzuki.

Re: Tips on Solo Sailing
A "jiffy reefing" rig allows you to put a reef in your mainsail-or shake out a reef--without leaving the cockpit. Much quicker and safer!

WTB CD 25D
I'm looking for a 25D in sail-away condition, hopefully in or near Midcoast Maine. If you're looking downsize, I can make a Typhoon Weekender in excellent condition, with trailer, part of the deal.

CD 25 vs 25D
As happy as I've been with my Typhoon, after five years of sailing I feel ready to move up to a bigger boat. I want something that will be easy to single-hand, have a head and a rudimentary galley, and be comfortable enough for cruises of a few days. I want a full keel because of all the lobster pot...
