1978 Typhoon Weekender + Triad Trailer - NC - $6000
Hi all, We bought this boat in 2022 anticipating a full refit then sailing Lake Keowee. Sadly that didn't pan out for a number of reasons (sick family members, surgery myself 4x, work, so on and so on), so we're putting the boat up for sale with the trailer. We put a lot of money on the frontend wit...

Re: Typhoon Weekender #1508 - Hull gelcoat replacement
I did this exact project on a Rhodes 18 on a trailer in my driveway. On mine, the problem was the topsides too, so consider yourself lucky. You're on the right track. It's a lot of work to make it look good. Don't get too hung up on the few flat spots, since it's below the water line and won't be s...

Re: Typhoon Weekender #1508 - Hull gelcoat replacement
One thing to clarify: The epoxy covers the entire hull, but except for spots where there is a flat spot or something else, it remains very thin. Using an 80 grit on the grinder ate through it in less than a second. So I tried to not leave an excess on the entire hull, rather use the excess to fill s...

Re: Typhoon Weekender #1508 - Hull gelcoat replacement
For fairing, I noticed two things: 1. I needed to fill in any flat spots or divots made while grinding off the gelcoat 2. There were these small holes along the top of the waterline (and a few below) that needed filled, sortof like this: https://i.imgur.com/ITzEhhJ.jpg My original thought was that t...

Typhoon Weekender #1508 - Hull gelcoat replacement
We bought #1508 a few weeks ago. She had been on the hard sitting on her trailer for about 10 years out of the water. Since the boat had been on the hard for so long, we figured it was as dry as it was going to ever be and it would be a decent idea to barrier coat the hull before we start sailing he...

Re: Your Opinion? Embarking on a Typhoon Project
Shinok, Sounds like you are doing some good work. I barrier coated my CD 36 with Interlux interprotect e2000 twice. Each time five or more coats with 2 gallons. I would be very surprised if you can't barrier coat a Ty with a gallon. Over a six year boat build to include gutting the boat and stripin...

Re: Your Opinion? Embarking on a Typhoon Project
Something else to consider if that water has been there a long time, the fiberglass inside the cabin and bilge can blister just as much as it can outside of the hull. Probably not an issue, but I'd insist on them pumping it out, clean it a bit, then make sure it isn't an issue. I'd also be concerned...

Re: Your Opinion? Embarking on a Typhoon Project
What happened to the mast? It looks like someone dropped it, but the hole for the pin is elongated and weird too. I also don't think the base of the mast is typical, mine is cut at a bit of an angle so it fits into the mast step properly, but maybe they changed the step in later models? I wonder if ...

Re: Typhoon Weekender outboard weight
Honda, 2.3HP, air cooled, simple and reliable, is the perfect Typhoon motor. There is no need for reverse when you can spin the motor. When I was sailing a Typhoon, I would use the rudder until I got into a tight maneuvering situation, then would use the motor to do whatever I want the boat to do. ...

Typhoon Weekender outboard weight
I ended up buying Weekender #1508 about 3 weeks ago and am looking at powering her with a newer 4 stroke outboard. Most sailing will be at a lake with some at the coast when we go that way for a few weeks every few years. I was reading here and I know the Ty is somewhat sensitive to weight distribut...

Re: Cockpit sole repair/replacement
I would not recommend the for-some-reason popular injection method. The injection method leaves a bunch of holes in the deck, makes fixing it properly down the line more difficult, and it won't fix the structural problems caused by wet/rotten/missing core. You are just postponing and making the job ...

Typhoon in Western NC/SC
We're looking at buying our second Cape Dory after selling our 27 some time ago and moving away from the coast to western NC. We are looking at a Typhoon Weekender. We're within 1 hour of Lake Jocassee, Keowee, and parts of Hartwell. On the NC side, Lake James isn't far either and Lake Lure is close...

Re: Shortening the Boom
Our CD27 had a main that was smaller than spec, both in foot and luff. I found the boat handled and balanced much better with the smaller main than the standard size main we later acquired. I do not recall the exact dimensions, but I found the boat was much easier to handle off the wind with the sma...

I'm not sure about the southern cities, but we've had horrible weather in Melbourne this year, a lot of very large and very violent storms.
