1978 Typhoon Weekender + Triad Trailer - NC - $3000

Post by Shinok »

Hi all,

We bought this boat in 2022 anticipating a full refit then sailing Lake Keowee. Sadly that didn't pan out for a number of reasons (sick family members, surgery myself 4x, work, so on and so on), so we're putting the boat up for sale with the trailer. We put a lot of money on the frontend with new motor, new sails, new rigging, new bottom, new valves, rebedded hardware, etc, but at this point need to see it move on so we can reclaim that space in our driveway.

Boat is located in Brevard, NC and we're asking $3000 OBO. More details of the great, good, and bad below.

This is our exit from sailing so we will include handheld VHF (new), whatever floatation devices we have (mostly new), sails from the PO (an inventory of at least 3-4), new bilge pump that hasn't been installed, valves, shown Trailer Valet XL, and whatever else we have.

Great - New jib and main still in the bag unused; New standing rigging still in the box and kept indoors (new wire, fittings, and turnbuckles); New running rigging still bundled together; Never run, new (kept in garage) 2022 Tohatsu 3.5hp outboard; New seacocks/thru hulls installed in 2023; New bottom paint/barrier coat in 2023 (still have around 1/2 gallon of paint and barrier coat left); Trailer bearings/brakes new in 2022 (never seen water); Backing plates inspected via bore scope in 2022 with no rust or issues; Winches/mast step/chainplates rebedded with 4200 in 2023 (pre-emptive maintenance, there were no leaks) with new hardware and backing plates on the winches; Custom mast hoist/transport included (eases stepping the mast and transportation); Trailer received new tires in 2022

Good - Decks are solid with no soft spots or symptoms of core rot. Trailer is a 2002, according to PO never saw salt water (tows great, we pulled her from FL to NC in one day), includes an extension tongue for launching; Spartan outboard mount; Cockpit coamings and companionway boards replaced by PO a few years ago.

Ok: Side hulls are a 4-5/10, they were apparently (according to PO) Awlgripped about 15-20 years ago but are showing age, structurally sound but cosmetically not the greatest, could clean up a bit with some wax but definitely showing age

Bad: The deck is in cosmetically poor condition due to improperly prepped paint, as said before the decks are solid, but we began removing some of this paint in places anticipating repainting the deck ourselves when life took over. All is structurally fine, they just need to be painted and cleaned up at some point especially some of the non-skid surfaces. The PO also applied some velcro to the cockpit that left glue residue that will need to be sanded down. Toe rails are functional but not in the greatest shape. One of the cockpit locker lids had some pretty bad gelcoat peeling, which is shown in the photos (this can be faired with epoxy and repainted, the laminate is fine); Brightwork could use some attention as well

Album with close to 100 photos: https://imgur.com/a/698OMcm - Note that these were taken in the middle of pollen season so some settled on the deck

I'm doing work on the boat over the weekends, so feel free to ask for updated photos as I work on repainting the decks.

Bump to drop price down to $3k. We have too many projects and need to clear the space in our driveway. There's no hope of us being able to pick up sailing anytime soon given our circumstances and I hate to see her sit.

Happy to help tow down the mountains for a buyer if that's a concern, as well.
