Re: Laptop for chart plotting?

I put forth a contrarian view. For years on both my CD 30 mkii and my Cat, I have used a Panasonic CF-31 and a backup CF-19 running Coastal Eplorer on both windows 10 and XP. I use these laptops for work so they serve double duty. Both are almost literally bullet proof and certainly waterproof. Coas...

Re: Help engine quit when at low RPMs in reverse

Hi: I have two volvo md2020d's on my catamaran so I am familiar with the volvo line and their issues. I am assuming you have an MD series engine. You didnt mention how many hours on the engine or if the fuel has been setting a long time. I am not comfortable with what your mechanic is recommending. ...

Re: Lightening wood inside cabin of CD22

Hi All. I had a similar teak darkening issue with a previous boat. Not my CD which was varnished with semigloss and was gorgeous. I used this quick method to restore the teak. Much less messy than teak brightener. Safer than acetone. Mix a dilute solution of TSP and Bleach. Do not go too concentrate...

Re: Bilge Pump and Gel Coat Crazing in a CD 30 MK2

I had Hull #1 for 13 years. It was a great boat and I still miss it today. Certainly worth bringing up to Bristol condition. I eventually outgrew and out aged it. I now have a Cat which provides me the additional room and rides nice and flat. That's something my ancient back and knees appreciate. Du...

Re: CD 30 MKII 1987 Leaking Ruder Post Gland

That gland on mine was the same as type as on the prop shaft. If tightening doesnt work out, you can repack it. I believe its above the waterline at rest which makes repacking it easy and explains why it only leaks when healed. Boyd - former CD 30 MkII owner Cat-A-Tonic 34' Prout Catamaran Fort Laud...

Re: Rethinking the Dinghy - The "Portland Pudgy"

The idea of the Pudgy is great, but... I took a long look at the Pudgy when my last RIB was about toast. I found two problems that killed the idea. First is its weight which is substantial. Much more than I wanted to put on my davits. I have a Cat so weight off the stern has a significant effect on ...

Re: Question: Need recommendation for through hull step wren

I just hunted thru my combination wrench collection for one that fit in the hole and caught the tabs, then put a big adjustable wrench on it and turned. Worked every time. Best of all its free and always available. Boyd - Former Cape Dory 30 MkII owner s/v Cat-A-Tonic 34' Prout Catamaran Fort Lauder...

Re: Universal M-18 engine in my CD30

Something I forgot earlier: You can check the intake valves for leaks easily. Pull the air cleaner and pull the fuel shut off. Rotate the engine by turning the crank pully. Listen carefully at the same time at the air intake...if you hear hissing... you may have leaking intake valves. On one of my p...

Re: Universal M-18 engine in my CD30

There are other possibilities: A fouled prop which is putting too much load on the engine. This causes my MD 2020Ds to exhibit similar symptoms, but not the oil slick. The engine is and has been running too cold for a while. This causes soot to buildup on the injectors, piston rings, and will eventu...

Re: CD30 Water Tank

Over a decade ago when I had my MkII, I fixed the plastic water tank crack with a soldering gun and strips of plastic cut from a gallon water jug. Just V out the crack and start filling with melted plastic. When its level, I heat welded strips across the crack and put in a final piece in the directi...

Re: Help me find the source of this leak

Check all hoses in the area. It could be leaking from a water hose, even if the water pressure pump is off. I suspect the caulk joints on the head side of the bulkhead are done and the water is weeping from water lines there.

Re: Questions re leak-proofing hatches, CD31

Hi All: A couple of years ago I replaced all 8 hatch lenses on my catamaran and the very large fixed windshields and side windows. Generally the original caulk was pulling back from the frames and fiberglass but not leaking. The major complaint was crazing. I just couldnt see out. For the hatches I ...

Re: navigation table CD30 MII how have you fitted the teak t

Hi: I had Hull #1 CD 30 MkII for 13 years and spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to use the nav table. Never did get there. Only thing I could figure was to use it standing up. When in place it pretty much obliterates any use of the pilot berth. I used the fold down dining table for naviga...
