Engine maint
The US Sail & Power Squadron offers an engine maintenance class. I can't speak to the quality because I have just signed up to take it. You can find your local group on Google from the main Squad page.

What a trip. I made one similar about 23 years ago. We left from the Maryland side of the Bay and made the first night in Annapolis. Second night in Cheaspeake City. From there it was on through the CD canal and down to Cape May. Rather than follow the coast, we made a crossing (my first) from Cape ...

Port St. Lucie
I am looking at the Port St. Lucie area for relocation. Is there anyone on the board that would be able to share some local knowledge about the area? I am particularly interested in areas to investigate and areas to avoid. What about boating in the area? What is the public beach access situation?

alternator
After some initial issues with my Nissan 6hp outboard (there was a wire pinched under the flywheel from the factory), I have been very satisfied. It is a little more difficult to start than some I have used but, it performs well. When considering an alternator, find out what you can expect. I though...

Thanks, Sea Owl
I do have in mast wiring which is why I took the mast down in the first place. I'll keep that in mind.

alternator
I have a TP-2000 and an alternator on my Nissan 6hp outboard. The alternator will not keep up with the tiller pilot even running 1-1.5 hrs to get out of the waterway to sail and the same to come back in. I use a charger to top off the battery occasionally.

Right
Thanks, Jim. That sounds exactly like what I encountered. There is a gummy white stuff holding the wires in place. I am really concerned about the idea of lowering the mast. The boat is not in a good place to do that. I guess the best thing would be to have the boat hauled and the mast lowered. Some...

Climbing the mast
I recently read about Sir Francis Chichester circling the globe in Gipsy Moth IV. Very interesting read. At some point he mentioned having to go up the mast. Does anyone have insight into how a singlehander would go up their mast while at sea? Seems like it would be a shaky operation.

Mast wiring
Problem with the mast/spreader light on my CD 25. Took the fixture down and checked the lights. They are OK. Installed mast steps so it didn't take a gang to get me up the mast to work on the problem. Today I went up and checked the wiring. It's old and brittle. The spreader wire has power but the m...

Thanks everyone
I appreciate the information and suggestions on recovering my winch handle. The rake sounds like a really good idea. There are also some kids with nets that catch bait in our marina. Maybe I can get one of them to try.
Again, thanks.
Again, thanks.

My feet
I have a pair of deck shoes that came from WalMart and cost about $10. They have been really great but have worn out. I got some shoe goo and worked on them where the sole split across the ball of my foot. Looks like that will extend the life a few more months. Yesterday I was at WalMart again and f...
