Re: Way overdue project photos - typhoon #108

Make sure you plan on spending a LOT of time on that project - it is more time consuming that I had originally thought. To support the boat, I added a couple of risers on each side of the trailer (it had been a speedboat trailer, so it was very low and flat). I made them removable by welding collars...

Re: Strengthing Typhoon hatch

I added four layers of cloth to the underside of mine, and then a 1/4" veneer of African ribbon stripe mahogany to the top. It weighs substantially more now, but it is bulletproof. Photos are under "projects", and the heading is "way overdue photos..." The mahogany is all be...

Re: Unbelievable

I feel your pain, OJ. We had May sniw here in Minneapolis for the first time in many years. It was incredibly depressing. This too shall pass.

Re: Way overdue project photos - typhoon #108

Wow, El Salvador. I had no idea. And yes, I am "JB", and you spotted the boat! Good eye. It has come a long way since that shoot, with a new Interlux Perfection paint job on deck and a lot of wood and hardware that followed. I enjoy the wood part way more than the fiberglass part. Do you h...

Re: refinish interior

I had a mid-eighties Beneteau before my CD, and I can tell you that foam-backed vinyl is a real mess when it starts to fall off. Which it eventually does, when the glue fails. Maybe try painting it with interlux Brightsides with some gloss-reducer mixed in, or white Kiwi-Grip for a little texture? T...

Re: refinish interior

I cut strips of 1/4" Teak veneer plywood, beveled the edges, and epoxied them to the inside of the hull to look like lapstrakes. It makes a very classy interior and didn't cost a fortune. For a headliner, I made a pattern out of cardboard, transfered it to two pieces out of the same plywood, an...

Re: Way overdue project photos - typhoon #108

Thanks Chris! The taffrail hatch opening doesn't get to the centerline, so I still have room for the factory standing rigging padeye. As for running rigging, i am running a Harken small-boat traveler across the front edge of the taffrail deck where it falls into the cockpit. I just got my scond coat...

Re: Way overdue project photos - typhoon #108

Companionway hatch/spray hood. This is the original flimsy fiberglas unit, with four layers of cloth added to the inside for strength, and 3/16" of African mahogany added to the top for looks. I longboarded and blocked the mahogany to get it reasonably fair, and then began building up coats of ...

Re: Extreme weather helm on Typhoon Weekender

Tom: You need to power up your jib - make sure it is drawing properly, top and bottom. If you have the back engine (main) running full tilt, and the front engine (jib) at half throttle, you are gonna go in circles. Is she sitting on her lines? If there is too much weight to forward, that will worsen...

More photos of hull #108 refit

I don't have photos of the grind-down process, but I used an angle grinder and removed every ounce of gelcoat on the entire exterior of the boat. This took me (on and off) the better part of a year, probably consuming a couple hundred hours in the process, not to mention numerous Tyvek suits, piles ...

Way overdue project photos - typhoon #108

Greetings all. I have been meaning to get some photos up of my ongoing (4 years now) Typhoon Weekender build, and finally found both the time and the camera. Here is a starter - what she looked like when I found her rotting away in a Florida boatyard in 2008, slathered in hunter green housepaint and...

Klem, that would be my worry as well. Usually if the problem surfaces after a daysail, it was crud in the bottom of the tank that got stirred up by your angle of heel. Where there's crud, there's usually more crud. A tank inspection is in order.

I got to know that little engine pretty well during the years that I lived with one in my Beneteau. Others have mentioned your fuel filters - diesels like their fuel clean, especially the mechanically injected ones, so there should be several filters in this system. Hopefully you have a large, clear...
