Re: Beyond My Known 2017

MV Stitch has a Forfjord anchor, once very popular in the Alaska fishing fleet. I had a 145 lb one on last boat for a storm anchor. Used it a few times, had to use main halyard to get it back on deck.

Re: Above the Salish Sea

It would be nice to pick a time of month when you are not seeing large variations in the high and low tides. If you run out of slack after Yuculta you can tie up to the goverment dock at Big Bay, Stuart Island, to wait for the next tide. Anchoring not advisable, too many back eddies. From the dock y...

Re: Return to the Salish Sea II

When one lives a 4 hour drive from his boat, watching on the computer is all he can do when weather comes in. I currently use http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sew/marine_only.php to ascertain current conditions. On the left side, under the current conditions, you can zoom in on the map and click on the monit...

Re: Return to the Salish Sea II

Your "system" at 11 am had sustained winds of 53 kn gusting to 70 kn at Saturna Island just North of you. Cherry point refinery had 46 G 61 at noon. I was watching the weather buoy at Nooksak River delta and Sandy Point and they were around 55 to 60 kn when both went off line. Lots of reco...

Re: Return to the Salish Sea

Under sail through False Narrows and Dodd is quite an achievement. Allen Farrell is the only other sailor I know of to make that passage. I get nervous just thinking about it. While the memory is fresh, record as many of the landmark signs and range markers as to which side of channel to navigate. T...

Re: Return to the Salish Sea

Amazing photo of the raccoon, David! Was it near the spot where you attached your stern line? Glad to see that yellow line is being put to good use. We like to keep ours on a spool, and then we use a mop handle as an axle for it to spin on as one of us rows ashore with the line. We have seen some bo...

Re: Salish Sea Again

Congratulations on another successful solo voyage to one of the most unique places in the Salish Sea. And also, for making it through some of the worst September weather, with a 933 millibar low, just north of your position. 45-knot winds were reported and gale-force winds for three days. We followe...

Re: Salish Sea Cruising 2014

There is a Sail Ranger Minto complete in Anacortes Craigs list at a fair price, 4552136392. We love ours and it rows and sails very well, tows nicely and a real NW classic. We can fit 3 adults and lots of gear. John.

Re: Salish Sea Cruising 2014

In lower Saanich Inlet we like the inner recesses of Todd Inlet. A nice secluded anchorage close to Victoria by bus at head of bay. The flowers should be working overtime at Butchart Gardens this time of year with this warm weather. My Frigoboat refrigerator died and I have to head over to fix it. I...

Re: Salish Sea Cruising 2014

Cabbage Island is just off of Tumbo Island Park on SE bottom of Saturna Island. Most people cruise up or down the inside passages of the Gulf Islands and seldom venture on the exposed eastern shore. We used to keep our boat in Blaine[now Bellingham], and on a return trip home we discovered this seld...

Re: Salish Sea Cruising 2014

I enjoy your photos, not many CD's in this part of the world. Over spring break weekend we were able to pick up a buoy on Matia and Petos,a real treat. Other than Cabbage Island on bottom of Saturna these are probably the jewel in the crown. If you get a chance during good weather try to make a stop...

14 Cape Dory

Thinking about buying a 14 CD as a tender for my 40 CD, but know nothing about them. Does anybody know anything about their performance, qualities good and bad, price, how do they tow? This is a sailing version, will water come up thru centerboard slot while towing. thanks, J.

Re: Discharge spartan seacock handle broke off

If you have to remove seacock from hull use heat on fitting to break the bond of the sealant between hull and fitting. I screwed a zirc fitting into my valve to pump grease into, but the previous post on penetrating fluid right now I think is good advise.

Re: Will a Cape Dory Balance on Its Keel?

Last time I hauled out in Bellingham the forward strap was uneven, and when they set me down to block up the bow went down and the back of keel was a foot in the air before the operator corrected it. I do not know that if he had not caught it it might have leveled off, but with the speed and acceler...
