Re: Rudder Position
I need to disagree with one statement about the rudder position. If you mark the top of the wheel with a turks head or even electrical tape, and you know that one complete revolution puts the helm hard over, then it's pretty simple to figure out the rudder position by the position of the top of the...

To me I think that the wheel might be a little better while sailing when you have to turn, but alot worse at anchor (or dock). You can't tie it up out of the way like you can a tiller. Also with the wheel you don't really know which way the rudder is facing like you do with a tiller. I guess one goo...

John, Is there any way you can email me some of those pictures we took during our cruise on Sunday? Also, I remember you were snapping some photos of Sanuye as we were heading back into the dock on Saturday. Can you send me some of those as well? Thanks!! -Dave PS: Me and Annie are going to head ove...

There is a CD25 for sale for $3500
If anyone is interested there is a CD25 for sale at Sundance Marina in Melbourne, Florida. I was told the guy is asking $3500. My boat is kept in the same marina, that's how I know. I don't know the specifics of the boat except to say it looks to be in average condition. The CraigsList listing is &q...

S/V Mirage
I can vouch for this boat that John keeps it in outstanding condition.
Mine is docked two slips over from his and I'm disgusted everytime I see how nice his teak looks compared to mine!

True they use these boats for racing. But this isn't a story about an experienced racing crew sailing around a couple of buoys over the span of a few days with designated watches, time to rest, and extra hands to help when things get out of hand, and other racing boats relatively close by on the sam...

A solo 16 year old, Cape Horn, and the Southern Ocean in an Open 40 design.
Are they sure she understands the risks? Well, I guess she understands them as well as any 16 year old could, which is not much.
I don't think this is going to end well, but luck be with you!

On the 28, the shrouds connect near the toe rail. Since I don't race the boat, I didn't feel that being able to sheet the sail in an extra inch or two would make much of a difference. I don't recall ever sheeting the jib or genoa in against the shrouds, so I'm pretty sure I'm not giving up much. If ...

Cape Dory 28 chain plate Replacement finished.(Several pics)
Hi all, I am just finishing up replacing Alaina's chainplates. The rear one was rusted badly, and the port side ones needed replaced as well. I decided to put external chain plates on her for ease of inspection in the future. They came out okay I think. It was alot of work, however. But it didn't ta...

I'm recovering my cushions..
I'm in the process of recovering my old cabin cushions and backs. I bought the covering material (not outdoor, but water resistant) at Jo-Ann Fabrics (it's a chain, so maybe they have stores in your area) . Jo Ann's was having a 50% off sale and it was already on clearance, so I got the stuff for $1...

Supplier for cutlass bearing
Hi all,
Well, Alaina is hauled out and on the hard. Biggest issue is cutlass bearing need replaced.
Where is a good place to order one from?
The size is 1" x 1.25" x 3", right?
Thanks!
