morris
We went to Bass Harbor in 2005 to look at a Morris Justine that we thought was just the right boat for us. I am a fan of Chuck Paine and think the 36 is quite a special boat. Well it happens that there is a Cape Dory 36 next to the Justine that had been refitted by Morris and was less then 1/2 the a...

Wisker Pole
My existing whisker pole seems to be jammed and try as I might, I can't free it. Perhaps there is someone who might know the magic of freeing these things, Forespar says not to use any lubricants. Does anyone have recommendations for a whisker pole that works well for them and perhaps the measuremen...

binoculars
I guess the other question is the built in compass. It does seem to add clutter to the view and between GPS, the binnacle and an Iphone is it really necessary? Is there a good argument for the extra 100.00 dollars that it cost?

binoculars
Simple question. I wish to buy a new pair of binoculars. I have dealt with an inexpensive pair for long enough. There are many to choose from and am wondering what advice this forum might offer. So far Steiner seems to have the upper hand.

ST. John River
Just spent a week on a friend's power boat on the St John River in Florida, The river where boats seem to go to die, the only boat I saw sailing was a Cape Dory 25. All the rest were motoring.

stay sail furler
I had a post on earlier about using a soft luff or Code Zero furler on a stay sail. I am going to try it. It will give us the option of removing the stay to allow the head sail to tack across the deck unobstructed. The soft luff is hoisted with the stay sail halyard and it should be easy to lower th...

stay sail furler
I am thinking of using a code zero or soft luff furler on my stay sail.
The reason other than being able to furl the stay sail would be that it could easily be lowered and would eliminate the stay to allow the yankee to pass easily during a tack. Has anyone tried this?

going over to the dark side
Well John I may not have quoted him quite the way he said it but you get the idea, and I think what we all might agree on is that Cape Dory's sure are good looking boats.

gone over to the dark side
My wife always said, going over to the dark side was a power boat. But that aside, I remember a quote by Dodge Morgan in "Points East" when he commented that one should never own a boat that they didn't want to look at over their shoulder rowing away from. I love to look back at our Cape D...

topping lift
The reason that I inquired about rigid boom vangs was as a way to resolve this very problem. Holding the boom up with out using the topping lift. I was trying to find out other owners that might have used rigid boom vangs.
