Re: Older Hand Held GPS ??

A few years ago I was transiting the Industrial canal east of New Orleans using visual navigation. I just happened to glance at the GPS chart display and according to that I was way north of the canal transversing the salt grass flats; not a happy thought if one were in the fog and relying upon the ...

Re: New Cape Dory Owner

It worked for me a couple of times. They really try to aid those who they believe to be newbies. If you are going east; remember to use the Harvey lock going into the Mississippi River. That way you get to go downstream to the industrial canal. If you use the Algiers lock you will have to fight the ...

Re: New Cape Dory Owner

Big hint when you approach the N.O. locks contact them on the radio and ask them "how does this work". When you do that they will usually lock you thru by yourself instead of with a massive tow.

De nada Bob:

There is no telling what their source was. They made a bulk buy of all the bronze from a facility. that closed.

If you end up looking for bronze Pintles and Gudgeons try Hamilton Marine. They are not in their catalog so just ask. Last time I ask they still had 100's in stock.

Re: Replacing Typhhon Weekender Cabin Top Tabernacle

Pictures always help! Make sure you are using a quality screwdriver with parallel blade surfaces and not a common American screwdriver with the tapered tip. Kroil or PB blaster combined with a little shock force applied should do it. Use an impact type screw extractor. http://c.shld.net/rpx/i/s/i/sp...

Re: Another Lock Your Prop article

I would think more consideration should be placed upon the transmission design. Does the transmission require pressure feed lubrication? If so is the pressure pump on the input shaft or the output shaft. If the components are just setting in a sump bath of lubricant then only external forces apply. ...

Re: Trailer... Tires... Axle weight rating...

There is most definitely excess camber. Most probably caused by excess weight. However it could be the result of improperly assembled axle. I noticed that you have a dropped axle; you might want to have it checked for excessive camber. Or, you just might want to replace it with a new axle. Look here...

Re: Kill switch for auxiliary engine on Cape Dory sailboats

First and foremost a kill switch will not help a lot if your sails are up. The best you can hope for is the boat will round-up and stall into the wind. If the auto-pilot is engaged you are really up the creek without a paddle. A kill switch could be installed if you just happen to have a fuel soleno...

Re: Homemade trailer warning

I bought a Typhoon setting on a Trident Trailer. I towed the boat from Georgia back to Texas. When I went to our Department of Public Safety for the required inspection prior to registration I got a really big surprise. The trailer had some how got out of the factory without a TIN. When I contacted ...

Re: Should I replace this bow plate? CD Typhoon

Do what I did. Find a local artist that works in bronze. Remove the piece and take it to them and have the hole welded. Then re-drill and treat the unit with a little chemistry to age it and no will ever know. Cost is minimal. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/sovereigndiver/Cape%20Dory%20Typho...

Re: Raising My Typhoon on My Trailer

If you move the bow roller and adjust the forward side supports the natural balance of the boat will cause the bow to lower and the stern to rise. After placing a block under the aft portion of the keel I used a engine hoist to raise the bow and block it. This is not a heavy boat.

Re: Best hard bottomed dink for the money?

Here is a possible deal if you are good with your hands. I see about $500 in material and about 60 hours labor. You might want to also acquire the brackets and fiberglass battens to support a soft cover. All components pre-bent gunwales, guards and hardware are available from DYER. A little time and...
