Re: Universal M18 Oil / Dip Stick
Well, in my case its only about 8 ounces difference. If it were more than that I might agonize too!

Re: Universal M18 Oil / Dip Stick
Same issue with the M25 - the instruction manual oil volume is based on level mounting (i.e. typical Kubota tractor installation) of the engine, and dipstick is reading based on the down angle imposed by mounting in typical Cape Dory installation. I base my oil fill on the dipstick reading, which is...

Looks like the ocean sunfish (Mola Mola) we saw off Block Island a number of years ago. Wild sight, never saw one before.

Lisa:
Having had a CD 30, better to use an inflatable. Even a 31 is simply not big enough for davits.

Re: Fuel shutoff solenoid and cable
Not a solenoid-just a lever on the injector pump. Lubricate the cable from both ends, and all will be good,

Re: Raw water pump leak dilemma
No reason for the Oberdorfer pump to leak, other than bad seals or shaft bearings. Silly to modify the engine to accommodate that. Rebuild or replace with same pumps - yes, it is still available. I get maybe 1 drip every hour of operation.

Re: Off-the-shelf exhaust riser for CD 31?
Jenn et al:
No complete M25 exhaust available off the shelf. I did mine up last year with an off-the-shelf mixer elbow from Catalina Direct, and the rest I made up with schedule 40 galvanized, Schedule 80 would be better, but not easily obtained. Let me know if you want the dimensions.

Re: ZF-10-M-R transmission problems continue, request for ad
How confident are you of the alignment? Operating time per year vs. total time used. This transmission should not fail so soon if it is not overloaded. Misalignment is a far greater contributor to overload and thus failure than use time. Also, what rpm do you run at?

Re: Painting around the cutlass bearing
Steve: I would tend to think that its more a case of you putting more time on the cutlass bearing than most. 7 years isn't bad given a reasonable amount of use. Most of the sailboats ( or power boats, for that matter) at my marina rarely leave the slip. It's a cheap part, albeit a pain to replace, b...

Re: Suggestions on coming about on a cutter
Except in very light winds the 115% headsail slides through the slot effortlessly. Just give it time as it fills on the back side of every tack. No need to furl and unfurl. Did this with CD30 and 8 years with CD31.

Re: Capacity of water tanks on CD 31
Just under 30 gallons each in the port and starboard tanks (center tank empty) balances out mine perfectly. For weekend cruising half a season 30 gallons is more than adequate.

Sorry to hear about that unfortunate mishap.
I broke left forearm on a business trip in Russia in March 2014. Upon my return and attention by my favorite orthopedist, he asked me what my priority was as far as rehab. My immediate reply - launching Oryx and sailing!
