Oh Boy...

I was 9 and my sister was 13; it was 1967. We spent part of our summers with our grandparents, in Barrington, RI. This summer we were introduced to our new Beetle Cat Boat. My grandfather took me for a lazy sail. I spent the rest of the summer in that boat, and many summers after that in the junior ...

What I wear...

Patagonia unmentionables, Fleece sweat suit, then;
If it's just cold, Carhart brown coveralls.
Wet and cold, Gunden's.
Servus Rubber insulated knee boots, ( they are like fireman's boots)

Not exactly yachty but functional, warm, dry, and reasonably priced.

I consider this to be a basic set-up for the Ocean and trolling. Most folks don't know this but Sportfish captains and mates, especially charter boats, hate to see sailboats fishing close by because it is a known fact they raise fish, and raise fish much more consistently than a SF boat. They just s...

Steve, Ben provided some great pictures. It looks like your trip to Bermuda has begun, Every boat is different and what is contained in a locker usually dictates how you want to fasten it. Heavy items will test enclosures more than light stuff. For this leg of the journey, I'm going to give o...

OJ, Heck, I don't see any need for you to "stand corrected". CD clearly changed the way they indexed and secured the Cap with the Post on the later models but no one knows exactly when, right? The key and keyway sure seem to be a better deal to me as well. After seeing what was there when ...

Re: Rudder Post

Steve: My Ladybug is a 1972 Ty Weekender. I had the same problem you describe. Mine has two bolts, one for clamping the strap to the shaft, the other is located in front of the strap and the bolt when tightened goes into a hole in the shaft. Mine may be a fairly recent adaptation by the previous ow...

...I just really want to get this boat sailing asap so I can finish teaching fiance how to sail before our charter on Nov 16th- looks like we may have to wait on that! Thanks, Ben Ben, one thing I've learned over the years is sailboats care not about time and schedules. Even if you find the rudder,...

Ben, You're toast! Call the insurance company and have them total it. I'll be down to get the salvage next week. Seriously, give it a little time and OJ will be here to help. From what I can tell he is the TY rudder Guru. I bought a TY with the rudder already gone so we are in the same boat. ...

Alcohol Stoves

I'll get this out of the way, first. I like pressure alcohol stoves; real stoves with real ovens. I specifically like the older versions with cast burners. They are bulletproof. Check the brushes and replace the Teflon seals once every 30 years. The flimsy primus type burner, not so much. I like the...

Re: dugout,...Man that sounds like a great idea!

I'll look around for a FAA rigger in the area. I have to admit though, I do like the idea of a PDF as well, but I agree with you and try to tie off in such a way that I shouldn't leave the boat. Then again, there's old man Murphy! Don't get me wrong; I'm all for PFDs. When in protected waters, no h...

Re: PFD and safety harness

I have finally admitted to myself that I have out grown my current PFD, and harness. Do you have a PFD / Harness set up that you really like? Thanks Gary Yes, I took my "oil skins", coat, to a parachute rigger and had him build a harness into the coat between the lining and the outer mate...

Re: Boat shoes

When getting the Converse All Stars--get the HIGH TOP models in Pink or Red. They say yachtsman to others who don't have our our sophistication "Chucks"(Chuck Taylor's), Are like Porsches. They are Red, black, or White. Any other color is, how do we say, not right . I think we are ...

Boat Shoes

I have a pair of Sebago Docksiders which work well jumping on and off Yachts in a marina with no shoes rules, like at boat shows. I personally don't care for them, generally, but Keens are nice for wet launch and landing a tender, and better than flip-flops. They were a gift so I try to wear them. I...
